I e-mailed Smart Scoop for info on how retailers can tell which units have the upgraded features, since I planned on purchasing from Foster & Smith and wanted to make sure I received the latest and greatest. Turns out there isn't a method to do this--no serial numbers or manufacture date--and additionally, the company apparently isn't including the upgraded features with newly minted units...or at least that's what I read from the e-mail. I've quoted it below, in its entirety:
Hi there...
I apologize for the delay in getting back to you but I had to research your question a bit before I could answer it.
There are no markings on the outside of the carton that indicate lot / batch numbers so it would not be possible for Doc Foster to correctly ship you the newer SmartScoop with added features.
We have been aggressively testing and retesting SmartScoop and improving its functionality and recently created an upgrade kit. The kit includes a new, stronger motor, new litter rake with more tines for catching waste, a taller waste deflector, nylon guides to make the unit more stable during the cleaning cycle, litter rake comb sized to the new litter rake, and stickers reminding you to keep the rake safety door closed, as well as an updated littler level sticker (we reduced the litter by about ¼" to make sure the motor could move through it more easily).
One option is to send you this kit when your purchase and receive your SmartScoop. If you are interested in trying this kit, we'd be happy to ship one to you (at no cost).

Nice that they are working on the product in real time and responding to customer requests/feedback. However, it strikes me as quite odd that they don't have some sort of QA/QC system code for the current boxes, or at least a manufacture date. That comes across as rather sloppy to me, but then I work in a very controlled environment where protocol must be followed or the entire batch has to be thrown out.
At any rate, it appears that anyone currently purchasing a Smart Scoop will need to request the upgrade kit, and that there aren't any current plans to simply include these upgrades with newly manufactured boxes. The latter is what I'm extrapolating from Jerry's e-mail; I'm certain someone could put the direct question to him as to when the "upgrades" will become standard.
It's Friday, whoopie-doo --
