@Cecilia I'm very sorry to hear about Simba. I had to let go of my beloved German Shephard a few years back. After having a malignant tumor removed twice and watching it grow back twice as fast each time I had to "make the decision". It never is easy but sometimes necessary to let go.
In regards to my litter box issue, it appears that Max and I have reached an accord regarding the litter box. I've had only the Scoop Free box with no hood set up in the hall closet with no second litter box at all. We've gone a full week with no piles on the floor!!! I even managed to catch Max exiting the closet with a fresh steamy pile of love in the SF box, so there's no doubt that he used it. Max is firmly back up to "cool cat" status.
Now if only I can get Daisy, my sweet little digger, to quit shoving all the crystals up under the rake ... but that's a very minor issue.
Thanks again for all the suggestions everyone. All in all I'm very happy with the Scoop Free and the Forever Tray. I'm still a tiny bit uncertain as to the supposed "health dangers" of silica crystals. I wish this would work with something like pine pellets. Perhaps in a couple more years ...
