Cats are [i]such[i] individuals!! No matter how many cats we've encountered, no matter how many years we've had them....they never fail to amaze with their quirkiness -- sometimes fun, sometimes not......
Here's another idea, which I don't know if you are willing to try. What happens on the SF is that over time some of the smells/bits will get trapped inside the actual mechanism itself. I'm wondering if this might be contributing to your kitty's avoidance of the SF. The cover part is actually a simple clam-shell design, held on by 11 small screws. What I do about once a year is to take the whole SF outside on a nice sunny day, disassemble it, and use some Nature's Miracle to clean all the areas that we don't normally access. It's surprising just how that can help to get rid of some of the pesky residual smells we can't account for.
And it's not difficult at all to do..........
