Question about Scoopfree - covering poo

Postby shelby77 » Sun Jan 17, 2010 10:57 pm

I am considering getting Scoopfree but want to make sure it will work for my cat - she does not cover her poo - terrible problem since she was a kitten! If I didn't love her so much I would get rid of her, because I am constantly running to the litter box to cover and clean the litter to try to control the odor. I've tried crystal, clumping, pine, clay - nothing has controlled the odor. I am afraid the wet poo will get stuck in the tins - sorry to be so graphic. The other terrible habit she has is to poo on some extreme end of the box and pee at the other - crazy! I am hoping this ScoopFree might be a good solution.
Advice?? tia.

There are actually a couple of ways to address your concerns. The first is regarding the smells.

If your cat isn't covering her poos, and they're really smelly -- there's realistically no litterbox solution that can completely fix this problem. All of the auto boxes (SF as well as all the others) pretty much have some sort of timing solution to protect your cat -- so the poo is going to sit there uncovered for a period of time and smell.

So (in my opinion) the first step is to address the source of the smell -- and more often than not it is as simple as changing to a different food. There are numerous posts here at LBC in this section that address this pretty well. I'd recommend that as my first area of research.

Now to address the second question -- the way the SF works is to dessicate (completely dry out) the poops using the crystals. The standard SF times 20 minutes after your cat has used the box before raking, so unless the poos are very runny then they will most likely not stick to the rake and you should be fine.

As a side note, our own Stan has never covered -- so even with the right foods we still sometimes get a 20 minute period when we know he's done his business.

If only we could teach him to burn a match or do a quick squirt of air freshener when he leaves the bathroom we'd be much happier.......

You might check-out the Litter Robot (LR) as well. The globe rotates so your cat's poop will likely get coated with litter during the rotation cycle and then dropped into a drawer underneath the litter bed to keep the litter bed relatively clean. The LR rotates seven minutes after the cat uses the litter box and in this respect is one of the fastest electronic boxes to remove the poop from the litter bed. So, it may take care of the issue. The LR has been reliable and cost effective for me after the initial purchase price because I choose the clumping litter to use (and therefore the price of the litter). Less litter is used than a traditional box because the litter is completely changed less often although the globe itself can be wiped out weekly.
