Cleaning the forever tray?

Postby Tigerbaby » Mon Mar 10, 2008 10:34 am

These look terrific... Before I buy one of these,
I'm just wondering what you do to clean it out and how you compare it to using the disposables in terms of time, ickyness etc
Just how yucky does it get in the poo compartment?
I know that the savings are awesome, and the disposables aren't the best for the environment, BUT
We are expecting a baby soon (which I will be cloth diapering) and I'm just not sure how many pooey things I can handle for a while!!!

Also on a side note, does anyone else find their cat poops or that the poop collects on the SF wire at the back? Any solutions to this?

Sorry for this being such a poopy post!

I hate to say this, but a lot of the cleaning time depends on how picky you are about cleaning. I am a bit nuts about it so every 6 to 7 days I completely dumped the litter and than would get into the tub and scrub the thing completely with antibacterial cleaner and super hot water. If I let the trap area get to full of poo during the week (very easy to do with the four cats I had at the time), than it would have caked on poo under the lid and took a good bit of scrubbing to get it clean. I also would scrub the purple cover in the tub while my husband would put a paper towel under the rake and scrub it with cleaner and paper towels. It actually took a good amount of time to clean it this way each week and we had a horrible time getting the caked on poo off the rake since it always seemed to be coated after just one week. I have heard that some people just dump it and wipe it out with paper towels and a bit of cleaner, but I tried that and it wasn't clean enough for me and it took a zillion paper towels to boot. But as I said, I am a bit nutty about cleaning. I use to totally clean my normal litter box every few days even though i put liners in there...

Hopefully I can help a bit here.

The reason I chose rigid PVC in the construction of these is the ease of cleaning. I do a rake and stir about every 2 to 3 days, and full change once per week. I empty the tray into a garbage bag, do a bit of "scrape" to get the rest out using a pooper-scooper with a straight edge, then take it out back and hose it out. Then I give a quick spray with Lysol Kitchen and Counter, wipe down with a paper towel, and set it outside to air for a bit and then reinstall.

Depending on the food your using, the poop compartment shouldn't be too bad at all, as the poops get very dried out by the crystal litter.

Cats are such individuals, and what folks feed their cats varies so greatly , that this may not be the same as everyone else's experience, but I'm thinking it's pretty representative.

Hope this answered your questions!

Final part to the answer here (wearing my hat as the guy who makes these things) -- and that is they do come with a pretty much unconditional guarantee. If you find you don't like the tray, you can return it at any time for a refund.

And there's truly a wealth of knowledge from all the folks here at LBC to help as well............
