Smell with Scoopfree

Postby rcdoc » Sun Feb 24, 2008 3:43 pm

Unfortunately I bought the SF BEFORE finding this site and learning about the forever litterbox. This seems to smell a good deal more than the cardboard cartridges--mostly URINE odor. I have to empty it weekly instead of the every 10 days or so with the cardboard. I use the same crystals as in the cardboard ones. Anyone with any ideas? :D

Do you daily stir (scrape the wet crystals up, mix with the dry and let them dry out). Some cats pee in the same spot all the time, so that same "spot" can get saturated and smelly wet.

With my one cat (13 lbs.), I have to daily stir after day 3 of a new bag. With doing that, and empty the poop bin every few days, I can get a whole month before a change... no smell.

I'll try that. I didn't have to do that with the cardboard ones, but maybe it makes a difference with the reusable ones. Thanks for the advice!

How many cats are using your SF? Are they male or female? are they fixed? what type of crystals are you using?

I have the SF with two cats male and female, the forever tray, using the Fresh step crystals and have no problem with urine smell.

If you stick with the cardboard tray, you will have to deal with something worse than smell. Wait til the bottom soaks thru and you pick it up! pee litter everywhere with random turds rolling around.
