PermaScoops tray vs. foreverlittertrays

Postby jfs1234 » Wed Jan 23, 2008 5:30 am

Anyone have opinions on these two permanent tray replacements? I've heard the forever tray uses PVC, which may be toxic?

Is one easier to clean then the other? What is the average monthly cost to fill them? And how much maintenance do they take each 3-4 weeks?
thanks

It saddens me to have to respond to this same question yet again.

The reason it saddens me is that, for some reason, the folks at PermaScoop have decided that the best way to sell their product is through mis-information and fear-based marketing, rather than simply putting out a quality product and having it sell on it's own merits.

To specifically answer your question on the "toxicity" of the Forever trays, please know that I went through a fair amount of research before choosing rigid PVC. As I've said in other posts on this topic and will say again -- I wouldn't want to jeopardize your (or my) cats in any way.

The Forever Trays are made from rigid PVC. Rigid (also known as uPVC or unplasticized PVC) as used extensively in piping and other applications, such as:

- drinking water piping and drinking water units
- food service
- swimming pools/piping

Rigid PVC is FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved for the above, and is also certified to meet American National Standards Institute/National Sanitation Foundation Standard 61 for safe use in drinking water service. Yes, your drinking water, not just sewage and drain piping. It is also commonly used in the irrigation piping that waters the fruits and vegetables we all eat.

The information the PS folks are selectively using is outdated info that is (was) focused specifically on the debate surrounding phthalates, a compound that is used to soften rigid PVC for other applications -- such as the bags used to carry blood plasma, toys, etc. Even in that regard, there is no conclusive current evidence to prove any of the claims, and there is an equal amount of data to support this (see the statement by one of the co-founders of Greenpeace elsewhere here at LBC). Just to put things in a more realistic perspective -- if you have vinyl seats or even cloth seats with vinyl trim in your car, you are sitting on plasticized PVC that used phthalates, and probably have been doing so for years with no ill effects. Vinyl seats in cars have been (and continue to be) made from this same form of PVC -- we're just used to the more common name of "vinyl".

If you look through all the posts I've ever put here, I've never, ever said anything derogatory about the Permascoop folks. In my view, they were just someone else providing an alternative for people using the Scoop Free. It's too bad it had to come to this.

There are currently well over 500 very positive feedbacks posted on Ebay, plus several others you can also find posted both here at LBC and on Amazon regarding the Forever Tray.

Regarding the other parts of your question -- both units should take about the same amount (approx. 4lbs) of crystal litter. There are numerous posts elsewhere here at LBC with more details on litter, changing frequencies, etc.

I hope this answered your question.

I'm confused about your post above. Those are questions one would normally ask in the fact finding research before buying something. Yet, in another post today, where you are complaining about their customer service being horrible, you stated that you bought 2 PermaScoop Trays, and the alarms on January 8th. Wouldn't you want to know about cleaning them, the safety of them and the cost to refill before giving them your money? You have been a long time scoop free user, like as far back as when they came out. What's up? I don't get why you would buy first and question after the fact.

That's correct. I have not bought either the perma or forever trays as I'm just now close to running out of my original batch of 24 or 30 cartridges.

I'm a Forever Tray fan. :) I have one kitty, use the cheap Mimi crystals from Walmart ($3-something for a 4 lb. bag), and with daily stirring to mix them up (takes 5 seconds) that one bag can last me 4 weeks before changing. So i'm spending less then $4/month on litter now. The Forever Tray rocks! :D

Lol, thank you for clearing that up! I apologize to both of you for that mix up. I just could not for the life of me figure out why jfs, who has been here for a long time, ask those questions after buying the trays! It makes perfect sense now: he didn't . Please accept my humble apology.

Re the cartridges, I have about 10 left of the closet full I got during that petsmart fiasco. Thank You Petsmart! I'm keeping them in the closet, out of site, for emergency use. I buy a cart full of the litter at walmart about every 6-8 weeks. 1 bag will fill both trays. I try to change them every Wednesday (There are 4 cats using the 2 scoop free boxes and 4 cats generate a lot of poo and pee!!) My cats are cuckoo. They use one box to poo in and the other one to pee in. The pee box gets nasty if I don't change it once a week. I don't want them jumping up on the bed and have their feet smelling like wet litterbox as they jostle for the position closest to my face. gag.

Read my post to learn what kind of company Permascoop is. It should make your decision easy.

I bought a Permascoop and used it for all of fifteen minutes. The shape of the waste trap causes any solids to flip over the rake. Then when I emptied it out, I couldn't remove the crystals stuck to the sealant around the edges.

Also read back in this forum to see where someone posted in a horror story about how his cat became seriously ill from a PVC cat tree/litter enclosure, whatever that is. It was terribly suspicious -- someone was trying to slam the Forever Trays with a bunch of lies and scare tactics.

Hi Bette

Exactly my thoughts:suspicious. I believe it was probably the guy who was making the permascoop trays, posing as a 'satisfied customer'. The whole post sounded so scripted.

Thanks for the scoop on the Perma! sounds like junk

Jack and Stan's Dad's Forever Trays are perfectly safe and work flawlessly.

I still got no resolution from PermaScoop. I just got done disputing the charge with Amex. They'll at least give me some satisfaction hopefully.

To anyone else - stay far away from PermaScoop.

They still won't answer any of my emails. Neither will the peeps at Scoop Free aka Lucky Litter LLC. I wonder how the case of patent infringment against Lucky Litter is going. I haven't found any news on it.
