How does the permascoop work?

Postby tortiebaby » Wed Jan 09, 2008 4:14 am

I just bought a scoopfree litterbox and didn't realise where the poop went. I thought it would be like a littermaid and go into a seperate compartment which would be replaced.

Well, I bought the scoopfree with the hopes of getting a Permascoop tray.

I was wondering if someone could tell me where the poop goes? Does it go in a seperate, removable compartment? If so, do I have to wash out the compartment every time I empty it, or is it disposable?

I'm certainly hoping it's disposable becaue the though of having to wash out a "poop compartment" is pretty gross. Gross enought that I'd probably rather just waste the money on continually buying cardboard trays.

Sorry for all the questions. ;)

Sorry to say -- but with any of the permanent replacement trays you'll need to periodically wash it out as you would any other cat litter box -- there are no disposable parts on them. There seem to be two distinct "camps" with the trays -- those who are OK with the periodic cleaning (which really isn't that bad) in favor of lower cost and less cardboard waste, and those who prefer the disposables.

All that said, a permanent tray may not be for you.

I'd suggest using the SF for awhile and getting used to the concept and how it works, and then maybe re-evaluating later down the road.

Hope this helps!

I have no problems with giving the litterbox a good scrubbing once a month, I'm used to that since this is my first electric litterbox and I've had cats all my life, lol.

It's just that I have 2 cats and one box and I'm not keen about having to scrub the tray every week. Ya know?

Is the area where the poop goes removeable or is it attached to the main tray? If it's detacheable then I could probably make somthing to repace it with. I always have lots of boxes around here and, if I may so brag, am pretty inventive, lol. I think I could work something out. However, if it's not removeable then I'd probably have to suffer with the cradboard trays til someone comes out with a new kind of tray. :P

There are several photos of permanent trays floating around for you to get a good look at them -- but the bottom line is that they are all simply a plastic or PVC version of the cardboard boxes -- so unfortunately no removable or disposable drawers.

With the crystals "a good scrubbing" isn't needed like with those old-fashioned clay litter boxes because nothing "sticks" to the tray/pan with crystals.

After a month I just slip a garbage bag over the tray and dump the entire contents of crystals in the bag. I then take a Clorox wipe, wipe down the tray, wait a few minutes until that drys, then refill with new crystals.

I empty my poop bin every 2-3 days if I'm home bc the box is in my bathroom, but I went away for a week once and she had no problem with not having it emptied until I came back.

Am I doing enough by cleaning it that way?

Is the poop-bin removeable? That's what I'm trying to figure out.

Is it removeable, or will I have to remove the entire perma tray to clean it out?

No, it's not removable, but it very easy to clean.

Just lift up the top (the top piece is actually made to lift up.... no need to detach the magnets, etc.) then with a little plastic scooper just scoop the freeze-dried shrunken little tootsie rolls out. :D

I shake off the crystals on them then plop the turds in the toilet and flush. Easy since the SF is there in my bathroom. I know the bag says don't flush, but I'm assuming they mean don't flush the crystals. I don't, just the little #2's. :)

The crystals do a dehydrating thing to them, they shrink and harden, it's nothing like what that clumping litter does to the waste.

Oh..l forgot to add, I think only the Forever Tray has the floating hinge so that you don't have to unhook the magnets each time to empty the bin. That's the tray I use.

The Permascoop tray might require different steps to clean, sorry, I forgot to mention that.

I love the concept of the scoop free litter box. I have had one for two years now. I bought the forever tray at the beginning and have now ordered a second one. I was having a problem with the first one and now I'm having a problem with the second one. Right in the middle of the tray it gets discolored from the urine and I end up with a pee spot underneath the plastic on my tile. I don't know how its getting through. Has anyone else had this problem?

The stain is easily taken care of on your tray -- all you need to do is get some Lysol Kitchen/counter cleaner and a sponge with Scotchbrite on one side. At your next litter change then spray the area, let it soak for a couple of minutes, and then scrub lightly with the sponge.

As far as underneath your tray, there's no way urine can soak through -- whether you have the older PVC version or the newer high impact plastic one. You may have a "side pee-er' (discussed in other parts of this forum) and urine is getting underneath.

Please contact me directly and I'll be most happy to help get this solved for you.

Thanks for getting back to me. I have only used water on the tray because I thought I read that initially in the care instructions. I understand what you're saying about the plastic not leaking through. Although the pee spot is always under the stained are of the box , right in the middle of the unit with everything else being dry. This happened with my original box, that's why I bought a new one.

You may want to visit the "side pee-er" post here on the forum (also at my website). I'm also most happy to help off-line, either by email or even by phone if necessary -- just let me know!

my question is not how it work, but where do i find one? Amazon.com says that they are sold out of the Permascoop trays and don't know when they'll get more back in. Is there a place other than Amazon to buy a permascoop tray?

Having both a Permascoop and just this week added a Forever Tray, I say go with the Forever Tray. The Permascoop is not one solid piece, whereas the Forever Tray is (except for the floating lid). The Permascoop has hinges and I can't tell you how many times it has closed on my fingers when I'm just scooping out the poo. I can tell already the Forever Tray is superior.

I knew the Forever Tray is temporarily out of stock and to my knowledge you can only get it from Rick, who makes the tray. I did not know that about the Permascoop.

Take care, Betty (mommy to Emma, Zach, Ryan and Ethan
