Picky Kitty

I'm researching different automatic litter boxes for my cat, who seems to have issues peeing in the litter box. She poops in there every time, and will pee in there if it is spotless and pristine...Otherwise its on the carpet in the corner, or on the occasion that I have locked her in the bathroom with the litter box...on the mat in front of it. Unfortunatly I don't have the time or money to completely take out all litter and put in frest EVERY DAY. I noticed that the Scoop Free doesn't use clumping litter....does that work well for dealing with cat urine as well as poop? I don't really understand what my cat's issue is....but ANY suggesstions would be apreciated. HELP!! --

Does she pee outside the box right after pooping in it, i.e., is the box not pristine because she has just popped in it? If so, she may need a second box to urinate in. (My cats poop in one spot and pee in another... Your cat may want more space between her "jobs", thus, goes outside the box...) I would suggest trying a traditional litter box using crystals in addition to your current litter box system & see if she will use the crystals (rather than the floor). The crystals will absorb the urine. Depending on the depth of crystals, you would only be changing crystals maybe once a month for one cat. A crystal box used for urine only is easy to clean. One of my cats has this system and it works very well. But with a very picky cat, she may decide, after one use, that the crystals are no longer clean.

With regard to "pristine" boxes, the LR will cycle in seven minutes after the cat has exited the box... the globe rotates cycling the "clean litter" through a screen into a compartment while the waste is cycled into the drawer under the globe. I would not call the remaining litter "pristine" but it is relatively clean. The Cat Genie actually sanitizes artificial litter but you need to set a timer with it, i.e., it does not activate automatically after the cat uses it as do both the Litter Robot and ScoopFree (SF). The SF (uses crystal litter) cycles in after 20 minutes. Only poop is taken out of the main part of the box. Urine is absorbed into the crystals. If you choose this route, you'll want to make or buy a perma-tray to keep the price of this box more affordable. The Pet Safe Simply Clean is also a reliable box and forum users have given it a good report. Like the LR you can use regular clumping litter with it -- no special supplies -- and it is always rotating (very slowly) so the waste is eventually cycled out of the box into a receptacle for dumping.

Good luck. Let us know how you solve this one.
