Crystals and High Amounts of Urine - Please Help!

Postby cousinoftheape » Sat Nov 10, 2007 4:14 pm

Hi all!

Up until recently, we had 2 cats and one SF, which was working out great. However, our second cat is now much larger (she's a Maine Coon, now almost 1 year old) and the SF can't seem to handle their urine output. The crystals are lasting maybe 4 days, with stirring, before the other cat starts refusing to use the box. I've tried changing the litter a little at a time to get it to last a week, but 6 days seems to be the outside limit.

Now, we've added a rescue kitten to the mix and she's now old enough to use the auto box. I know I need a second litter box, but I'm trying to decide whether to get another SF - would 2 boxes between the 3 cats extend the life, or am I going to end up changing both boxes every 6 days? That can certainly become expensive!

I've been cruising the boards for a while now and have read the whole SF board, but this is my first post. Any help, advice, or tips are certainly welcome. Thanks for your time!

What kind of crystals are you using? I highly recommend the FS crystals to some of the other cheaper brands. Perhaps try switching up the crystals that you are using and this might help.

I'm thinking with 4 cats (OK, I'm counting the Maine Coon as two cats!) that there may indeed be a second SF in your future.........

Being purely theoretical here (we only have 2 young males) one would think that cats by nature will tend to "even out" their use with two boxes, and extend your change intervals a bit.

We need the inputs of someone else out there who has direct experience with this!

I've been using a mixture of the FS and the UltraPearl (I think that's what it's called - with the alien looking cat on the bag). We've tried the Tidy Cat and Mimi options, but those don't seem any better...

I personally have not used the Ultra Pearls, although several people here have recommended them. I did hear somewhere on here recently that someone was using clay litter in their SF. Perhaps using a little regular clay litter mixed with the crystals might help your problem. I would not recommend the scoopable litter though. Another idea is that you could try to use a little bit of carbon with the litter or a little bit of deodorizer. If all of the crystals are yellow after 4 days then I would definitely recommend 2 boxes. If it is just the smell that offends the kitty then I woulod try the carbon/deodorizer.

I have not tried any of this so I do not know if it will work. BUT it never hurts to try. If it does not work then you know that there are other options out there.
