New to ScoopFree need help!

Postby Ozzy&Cher » Fri Sep 28, 2007 4:16 pm

I've had my scoopfree running for 5 days and things are not going well. The litter box is full of small poop particles. It smells terrible and I've had to clean out the trap twice. There is poop stuck on the rake and behind the rake. I've had to spend alot of time scooping the small poop particles out. If I don't, the cats (2 of them) track the crystal poop paritcles into the kitchen (ugh!!).

I am in the process of adjusting my cats diet by giving them less moist food. My vet told me to feed them moist food so I can't elminate it completely. As of today they are down to .7 of an ounce every morning.

I know that many of you have had success with Scoopfree. Can you please tell me what you are feeding your cats?
I'm feeding my cats EVO dry food and Wellness wet food.

I really want to love this litterbox but unless I can find a way to fix this problem it will be sent back.

My Holly eats dry food only, never wet food. She started off with Purina One for Indoor Cats, but I noticed her stool was kind of soft with that. Not runny, just soft. I then switched to Purina One for Sensitive Systems and that seemed to dramatically help her potty issues. No problem ever since.

Hi,

The wet food situation is a real dilemma, huh? You want your cats healthy -- but at the same time want the ease of use of the SF..........that's a tough situation.

My two cents is pretty much the same as Jenn's -- in that my two guys get Purina One dry food only and we've experienced none of the problems you mention. But then also we don't have specific health issues to deal with.

Best of luck on this!

My last kitty "Ginger" (also a calico), lived for 18 years on dry food. She did have arthritis her last few years, but that was understandable at her age, The only wet food she had was when she stole some Alpo from our dogs bowl.

Thanks for the responses. I stopped feeding the wet food since Saturday and the results are prominsing. One of my kitties may be in need of the Purina pro plan for sensitive stomachs. I'm going to pick some up today and see if that works for her. Then hopfuly I can get a little wet food back in their diet.

October 11 update

Switched to Eaukanuba food for sensitive systems and getting good results. so far the longest I have been able to leave the box without any scooping is 3 days. I also noticed the boxs performs best when the crystals are fresh. When they start to get saturated with pee they stick together and and don't go through the rack as easy wich results in more crystals being put in the trap which causes the trap to get full quickly.

I have another delema unrelated to the box. I just discovered that the mfg of Eukanuba has performed cruel testing on animals to develop their products.

If you just give them a stir daily (takes just seconds to do) that redistributes and airs out the wet crystals and then you don't get the saturated areas that stay wet. I don't think the inventor had cats that tend to pee in the same spot all the time, bc I think it was expected that the rake action alone would be enough for this redistributing of the crystals. I find a once a day quick stir to "redistribute" helps quite a bit though .... I went from two weeks to four weeks by doing this.

Nov 28 update

Finally found a wet cat food that agrees with my cats and that they will eat. Wild Kitty raw cat food. It is fabulous but expensive. that's all i will say about the food because I already submitted a post about it. And because my cats are eating moist food they seem to be drinking less and peeing less. The scoopfree is working woderfuly! I can easly go two weeks now between litter changes. I don't stir the crystals. My cats stir the crystals enough when they use the box. I'm very happy with this litter box!!

Update Dec 7th

I have not changed the litter in the Scoopfree since Thanksgiving morning. I cleaned out the trap about 3 times. Each time I also scooped out any saturated crystals and added a handful of the pearls. I should have replaced all the litter last night but I came home too late and was tired. This morning there was large amount of litter kicked out of the box. I guess that is a messege to me that the kittys want the box cleaned!
