Anyone with a large cat?

Postby nyccatwoman » Fri Jul 27, 2007 6:17 pm

I have a 3 month old male kitten and a 3 year old large male cat who's about 14 pounds. He's a big litter kicker too. I would like to try the Scoop Free box but I'm concerned the box will be too small for him and the litter will be everywhere. I'm hesitant to spend the money for this reason, and I was wondering how other large male cat owners have found the Scoop Free box works for them.

I don't have one of these now, but when I did have the Scoop Free, my 13 to 15 pound male used it with no problems. I don't believe he is a big kicker though and he also pees squating so don't know if that will help you or not.

Hello,
I have a large male cat and a scoopfree litterbox. My cat weighs about 12-13 pounds and he has no problem with it. He has never been a picky cat when it comes to the litter box so you may want to consider that. But if your cat's not picky it would probably be just fine. Hope that helps!

I also have a HUGE cat. He weighs 24 lbs. I have a Scoop Free Ultra and I do use the hood. He fits in the box with no complaints. I had to leave the hood off until he got used to the box because he was afraid of it. Both of my cats are big litter kickers and not much litter gets out of the box.

Well............Stan is a svelt 18 lbs! But he's tall (long legged).

Which presented a rather unique problem (er...."opportunity to learn" as once he grew to that size he figured if some part of his body (his rear) was in the box, then that meant everything was fine.

So he started to stand with his front paws on one side of the SF, and pee into the box (sort of). What that really meant was that he was peeing out over the other side. What a mess.

My solution was to make a custom "convertible top" Scoop Free, which now works great. I got one of the hoods, and realizing it would be expecting a lot to ask this big leggy guy to cram himself inside, I cut off the top of the hood so it's just the 3 sides (not very hard to do, btw) and that solved the problem.

Now if I could just get them to clean out their own tray every week.....................

Don't all cats squat to pee? I've never seen one lift it's leg.

I have two cats that weigh about 13 to 14 pounds. The male is a big digger. I have the scoopfree with the hood. Without the hood there would be litter everywhere. Still, when the cats exit the box more litter gets kicked out than with my manual petmate box with the hood. It's a small issue compared with the benefit of not having to scoop every day.
