Solution for wet bottom cartridges

Postby abbeytoo » Sat Aug 12, 2006 12:01 pm

I've posted this in a billion different places but I guess not everyone is seeing it.

There is a very simple solution to the cartridge replacement problem or wet bottom cartridges.

It is called coroplast. It is that corrugated plastic that signs are made from. Very easy to get. All sign shops should carry it. If you can't find it that way, people who have guinnea pigs use it to line the cages with-do a search that way.

All you need to do is cut a piece to fit the bottom of the cardboard cartridge and place it in before you put the crystals in. It will prevent kitty from scratching and tearing the cardboard cartridge and at the same time, keep it dry. The piece can easily be wiped with a piece of paper towel when its time to change the crystals. You do not need a new box every time you change crystals! Just keep the insert and reuse it.

I have made a permanant tray out of pvc plastic that looks like it is going to solve all problems. Someone requested pics and I will gladly post them when I can, but right now I am laid up following foot surgery and can't do anything but lay down and stay off my foot. Once I am up and around again I will post the pics of my project and the results of using it. It didn't cost much to make and I'm confident that it will work out just fine and will eliminate the need to use throwaway cartridges.

In the meantime, I'd appreciate some healing energy sent my way ~ I'm about ready to chew my foot off~

Hope you start to feel better. ^_^ I say we make this post a sticky. It would probably answer a lot of questions before people post.

Thanks for the help, my only question- won't the urine leak down the sides of the coroplast and still eventually penetrate the cardboard? I will definitely attempt to try this though. Thanks again!

I haven't had that problem. Both of my cats are major diggers and destroyed the cardboard in no time. I cut the coroplast to fit exactly (maybe even a bit tight) in the tray. I keep checking for wet spots, unable to believe that this fix can be so easy, and haven't found a wet spot yet. It will make the tray last a whole lot longer than without it, but it isn't a permanant solution. Working on that now....

No more leaks.....

Postby Jack 'n Stans Dad » Tue Jan 23, 2007 9:32 pm

My two little guys seem to pee more than any cat I've known, so I was looking for something to fix this.

I got one of the "forever" permanent replacement cartridges off of Ebay. Made of PVC.

No more leaks.

And it's paid for itself already just being able to clean and refill instead of buying cartridges all the time

Please accept my apology

I'm posting this on all four of the places I screwed up.

In my enthusiasm for this cool item, I did a stupid thing by putting it on here in an inappropriate way. I'm an engineer by background and so sometimes focus on the wrong things -- in this instance the cool tray for the cool SF.

I'm sorry for having done this -- and promise that it won't happen again. I honestly don't know what the heck I was thinking.

Updated idea for the cardboard tray:

Before using the tray, slip it into a kitchen garbage bag and then put the piece of cut to fit coroplast in the tray. This will protect the cardboard even longer. The plastic bag wil be a barrier for any leakage at the edges of the coroplast!

How do you do this without getting the bag all tangled up in the rake?

I like this idea though.

Frankly, I don't know. I don't even remember posting that! I don't think I have ever used a bag in my tray. lol Where does it catch? along the sides? I'll go out right now and put a bag in one of mine and see what happens and get back to you. I have one of the forever trays so I'm not using that coroplast piece. That was primarily for those that are still using the cardboard trays to extend the life of the cardboard. I'lll be back in a while with my results.

cool, thanks!

I realized that I don't want a forever tray, necessarily. I just want my disposable ones to last the two weeks they were supposed to last for two cats. after one week, it REEKS!

I now have TWO litter boxes, my scoop free and an old omega paws without the lid (my cat's fat butts wouldn't fit in it with the lid, so I'm still scooping.)

Box accidents are way down and I get decent cartridge life with two boxes. I'd like to go to two scoopfrees but I couldn't afford it until I figure out how to get cartridges without going broke.

I just thought of something else you might try. You could get a roll of that stuff that protects carpets. Its sticky on one side. Clear like saran wrap but thicker. line the cardboard tray before putting in the coroplast piece. make it go up the sides and wrap around. and of course, the bottom. that should make it useable for quite a while. I got a roll of it at home depot and was using it on the sides of the furniture when Mr Milo the spraying beast was here. Its worth a try.

I got busy and didnt get to do the bag thing yet. I made a note to myself and stuck it on the monitor so I will see it first thing in the morning. I'll do it then. Sorry bout that.
