Just got my scoop free

Postby millertime359 » Fri Apr 28, 2006 12:37 pm

I have been a cat owner for a few years now. I had looked at automatic litterboxes, but couldn't think of spending 100 dollars on a litter box. I had been using the old style litter box with the sifting liners. The problem was the cat would always find a way to poop in between the sheets and it would stink the whole house up. I got tired of this and went looking at an automatic litter box again.

I went searching for reviews and stubbled across the Litter Robot and this website. I found this forum to be very useful and after reading reviews about the Litter Robot, I was concerned. I noticed that everyone was happy with it and the customer service, but it seemed like everyone would break after a month and be useless for the cat to use. I also saw that they took at of up keep, it seemed to be more than a regular litter box required. That's when I found the Scoopfree.

I found the Scoopfree on costco.com. It's 200 dollars and includes 4 cartridges, the box and the hood. They are also selling a 3 pack for about 44 dollars. The main reason I got it from costco is because of their return policy, you can return anything for up to six months after purchase. This is great if you are as unsure about the litter box as I was.

After getting the box I set it up and everything ran fine. It took the cat a couple of weeks to get used to the crystals. He is using it now and has been using it for almost 2 weeks. I just have one cat and I haven't nocticed any smells yet. The motor is pretty quiet. I have been right by it when it's running and it's not that nocticable. It is a pretty simple design, so there's not much of anything to get gunked up. I will post follow ups in a couple of weeks when I find out if it goes for a full month.

This is a great forum for cat owners, I'm glad that I found it. I felt with the help it gave me, I could offer the same help to other cat owners are unsure about investing one of these litter boxes. i wouldn't reccomend it if you have more than like 2 cats, because of the litter costs, but if you only have one or two cats I do feel that it is worth the investment.

Welcome to our litterbox! This IS a great site and you will find everyone helpful and friendly.

I have the scoopfree also. Actually, 2 of them. And the litter robot. And everyother litterbox ever made. I am very pleased with the Scoop Free and have had no problems with it. One cat doesnt like the pearly litter, so he still poops in the litter robot and pees in the toilet. Thats fine with me.

The robot is great with just him using it. When all 3 cats use it, I always end up having to go thru hell to clean it. I started taking it to those do it yourself car wash places with the power sprayers. That gets the job done.

The scoop free has been effortless. Even if it did need cleaning, it would be a cinch. I'm happy with it.

thanks abbey,
It took me a little extra time to get Phil, my cat, used to the new litter mostly because I didn't have time to make it go quicker with work and school. That's what turned me off on the litter robot was hearing about all the up keep. I have a power washer so it's not like I would have to take it to the car wash, but hearing about having to keep the sensors dusted off and spray it down with silicon about once a month. i just couldn't see spending 300 dollars to have to do all that.

So far so good with my box, It seems like they did a good job with the design, I just wish that the refills weren't so much. I was reading that some people have been trying to make their own cartridges. Has anyone got a succesful one built that they were able to do with basic tools? My dad is a builder so I has access to basic tools. If someone could let me know what the found to be the best way to go about it I would apprecaite it

alright I got another update. It's been about a month and still no smells. My one issue, if you want to call it that, is I have to go down and sift the litter about once a week because it gets all stacked up behind the rake and leaves areas where there is no litter. It's no big deal at all. I manually send it into a cycle and use my old litter rake to even the litter out. It's takes like a min. to do. The cat likes to pee by the rake anyways so he always has litter there.
I'm going to change the cartridge this weekend.

Phil's front paws are declawed, but the back is not. I have not had any issues with him going threw the cardboard. If your cat is not declawed i would take Abbeytoo's advice and put a peice of thick plastic in the before the litter as an extra liner. I still love it and wouldn't give it up for anything. I has worked flawlessly and still looks new. I don't see any reason to clean it yet.

I have issues with tracking of the litter becuase mostly Phil will jump out and aviod the plastic hump that covers the waste. I went to store and bout one of those washable rugs for litter boxes and a plastic stoop that sits at the entrance on top of the rug. This has solved the litter tracking issue so far. I haven't stepped on any crystals yet.

Tracking seems to be my only issue too. With old clumping litter, I'd occasionally see little pieces of litter between my cat's toes (before she had a chance to clean herself), but thats not the case with the crystals. I'd love to see a picture of what you've done.

hey baldyy,
it really isn't anything fancy. I went to pet's supply plus and they have these different stoop things and a rug. both pieces are made for this issue. I'll post a picture tommorrow so you can get an idea out what they are.
