Sticking problems with Papurr litter

Omega Paw has an inexpensive, manually-operated litter box that uses gravity to collect waste in a tray.

Sticking problems with Papurr litter

Postby artgecko » Thu Oct 18, 2007 4:04 pm

Hey folks,

I'm new here and I am currently the proud owner of a large omega paw litter box (the "medium" ended up really being too "small" so I upgraded). I've been having some problems finding a litter that will work (clump well, isn't too pricey, and isn't bad for the cats), and so I've decided to come here and "ask the experts".

A little background about the situation:
I've been trying out various eco-friendly litters with some success. First, I used WBCL and found it nice, but too expensive. Then I switched to the poor man's WBCL, chicken feed. This also worked, but when I would roll the box, the clumps would sometimes bust apart, thus, I had to scoop after each roll.

I have since been looking for an alternative that isn't as expensive as WBCL, isn't bad for the cats, but doesn't have terribly soft clumps. This lead me to papurr scoop. It clumps, it flushes, it doesn't smell bad, and it has a rather fine, sand-like texture. BUT, it seems that it clumps more slowly than WBCL and as a result, sticks to the bottom and back side of the box...very badly. I am now doing about twice as much scooping after I roll the box as I did with the chicken feed.

So, I have three questions for you.
1. How many of you use papurr in the omega paw and is it working for you?
2. What other eco-friendly litters have you used with success in the omega paw?
3. Could I spray the inside bottom of the box with pam to keep the clumps from sticking?

Thank you for you help and expertise!

I have never tried either Papurr or WBCL , but have tried most of the rest. It seems like they are expensive without much of a reason as most all of the litters are made of clay, which is very recycle friendly, though not in your yard or compost pile, but then again, neither are WBCL or Papurr, for that matter.

The litter that I have had the best experience with is Tidy Cats Scoopable Blue while the wife likes Fresh Step Scoopable. Both are made of kaolin (glorified name for clay, which is abundant here in the South, maybe too much so! :) ) and work well in the Omega Paws units (we have 6 of these units, all large sized.) The only problem we had with sticking was when we started on the 1st few units, due to the cats not realizing which box they SHOULD be using (per what I would like them to do), we were getting clumps sticking to the bottom of the box when rolling them. The solution I found that works well was to buy a HEAVY gauge plastic painting drop-cloth at Home Depot and cutting it into pieces to fit UNDER the litter and be held in place around the outside of the box by the rim. Now, when I roll the boxes, you can hear the clumps falling to the catch container and no more manual scooping here. :D

You may wish to give the plastic sheet solution a try and see how that works with Papurr.

Let us know, as would like to know if it lives up to its claims.

Thanks for your reply!
I have tried several litters and combos since I originally posted this.

I have come to the conclusion that the papurr just abosorbs too slowly, thus you end up with a super large clump at the bottom of the box, which sticks... To solve this I tried using non-stick cooking spray (which worked ok for a few hours and started growing MOLD!), and mixing it with another litter (WBCL).

I ended up switching to all WBCL and have had no problems with stickage, loose clumps, etc.

I am now using FP scoop becasue one of my cats might be allergic to corn.

I'll try using your tarp method if I have any stickage in the future.

Thanks for your help!
