Hi,
I am so glad I stumbled upon your discussion. I have had my littermaid for about 6 years and have been looking at replacing it with the new model 9250 because it has (like the other newer models) removable rake so I can wash it. But now after reading all the issues, I am thinking about not doing that.
Over the years I have developed few modifications to its use. For one, I use it with the fresh step crystal cat litter. I have tried other brands but the Fresh Step crystals work the best. Once a week I take out the now yellow crystals and pour new litter in. The rake takes the solids out, and the crystals absorb the urine. You have to be careful not to put too much in as it will keep on raking until I take some litter out.
I also don't throw away the plastic containers. I keep it for a week. I empty it out and line the bottom with lysol or clorox wipes. I use 2. I have also tried the kirkland brand but the orange smelled horrible to me. The combination of the wipes and the crystal litter worked very well.
I do wish I could take the plastic rake out for washing because I really hate trying to wash it without getting any water on the motor area. And I would like to find out if I can purchase just the pan. Over the years the urine changed the plastic. Maybe I'll try customer service unless someone knows where I can buy it.
I would be curious to hear how did the ionic air component worked. Mine doesn't have it. I have put full size ionic breeze from sharper image near the litter box and it works so so.
The other litter box is just a plane old box with scoopable litter.
Thanks! Michaela
