Litterfree Substitute Granules - Source?

Postby Blynkens Mom » Wed Jul 23, 2003 2:44 pm

Found this on another website which was discussing where to get replacement supplies of granules; supposedly this company sells plastic pellets for an extremely nominal fee. I haven't contacted them as I don't need any pellets yet, but wanted to pass on the info in case someone who does wants to try them out.

Granuales

Postby LBoogie » Thu Aug 07, 2003 6:38 am

I am happy to have found this site. I have read almost all of the posting, so I am pretty much up to speed on the situations. I have used OdorBan in the past, in the box itself at the beginning of the cycle. I have switched to the Dawn method and find that better. The unit doesn't smell as much as it had with the OdorBan, go figure :? . Regarding the granuales, I was wondering if craft beads may work? As long as they are large enough not to be sucked into the impellor :?: Any thoughts

What the gurus here have said is that as long as the beads are at least 3mm or larger, you shouldn't have a problem.

I haven't had a chance to use the plastic pellets that kids use with rock tumblers because my cats have only recently started using the LF (they had a longshoreman's strike against the new device but are now starting to give in and return to work  ) but when it comes time to replace the granules, I'm going to try them unless LF is back in bidness by then.

I refuse to buy granules for $75.00 on EBay!

I'm tempted to never go back to them if at all possible. I consider myself a good customer, but I do not enjoy being left to tread water :P

Litterfree granules

Postby my2cats » Sun Aug 17, 2003 7:56 pm

Any thoughts on whether small gravel or pebbles would work as a replacement for the granules? Of course they would have to be no smaller than the granules so as not to be sucked up by the pump. The only difference I can think of is that the gravel may not swirl around in the wash cycle like the plastic granules, but maybe this isn't necessary ??

You will break your Litterfree if you use Tiday Cat crystals.

You can order solution from petco.com, but the granules can only be found on eBay. You could call your local Pet stores, but they probably won't even know what you're talking about.

Do NOT use anything but LitterFree granules. There isn't much reason to replace the granules except if your cats track too many of them out of the box. This can be remedied by periodically throwing all that you find OUT of the box back INTO the box.

There was some discussion by those who know much more than me that the granules could reduce somewhat in size due to the frequent impact -- i.e. bumping into one another during the cleaning process -- and thus the need for replacement. I can only imagine that it would take a VERY long time for this to happen. My guess would be at least a year. By that time, hopefully LF will be back in business and we'll all be able to get granules at the "normal" price of $24.99/box. There is NO reason to buy granules at the ridiculous EBay prices!!

The only substitute that some of us have contemplated is using other PLASTIC granules/pellets that are at least 3mm in size as an emergency. It must be noted that this should be a last resort as the LF is only designed to work with LF granules. Anything else would be at the user's, and their LF's risk!

I have it on good authority that the granules will NOT appreciably diminish in size over time - they are too hard to chip or erode, and the water acts as a cushion. Perhaps in 50 years of use there might be a problem, but that is a very long time.

For what it's worth, I randomly pick 20 pellets out of each of my boxes once a month and measure them with an accurate instrument that is able to resolve to .0001 MM. They have not changed in size over time.

Check Petco.com!!!

Postby konakitty » Wed Oct 01, 2003 2:06 pm

:!: Petco.com currently has the granules - on sale! :D Around $22.95 or so for a box. I think the sale goes for about the next 2-3 weeks.

Wish they'd get them in the store, so I wouldn't have to pay shipping..... But, hey! Just being able to get them at all is great. 8)
