Alternative solution to Litter Free

Postby konakat » Tue Jul 08, 2003 7:16 pm

We have not used the official Litter Free Solution for over a year. We initially diluted antibacterial hand soap and used a small amount in most cycles. We do not refill the bottles as doing this destroyed one of our two units soap dispensing equipment. The box still works fine otherwise.

More recently we add a half-tablespoon of Lysol toilet bowl cleaner during each manual run of the cleaning cycles. This works great as Lysol seems to have been developed for such a use. It barely suds at all and I wonder if it could be diluted and used in one of the bottles.

To refill the bottles, we simply cut a small hole in the top and used a wine cork to plug the hole. We currently recommend pouring the solution into the box during manual cycles, so let us know if anyone tries something safe that works in the dispensing bottles.

The soap (in small concentration) doesn't seem like such a bad idea, although sudsing would be a concern. I'd be a little scared of using toilet cleaner though. Remember that your cats will walk on the washed litter and then later lick their paws. If there is any residue left from the toilet cleaner (which is usually all considered toxic) it will be ingested by your cat.

Someone had even suggested using Listerine. That is one of the better ideas I've heard, again accepting that small concentrations of ANYTHING is the key.

Lysol Toilet Bowl cleaner

toilet bowl cleaner ! ?
Sorry, but from what i have read here:
http://www.reckittprofessional.com/cust ... 3867_r.pdf

I don't want my guys anywhere near it.

I live in a fairly pure and organic household though, those commonly exposed to more toxic environments might fair better.

Toilet bowl cleaner

Postby konakat » Wed Jul 09, 2003 9:12 pm

The Professional Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaner we use has 10% hydrochloric acid as the main active ingredient. If it is placed in the first cycle, it will be totally rinsed off by the last cycle. All of the other ingredients are inert. I would not recommend the other toilet bowl cleaners with ingredients that I cannot pronounce. We purchase ours at Sams Club. Ther is no sudsing at all. Good luck.
