I'm really sorry to hear that you were not kidding, but glad that everyone is ok. It's really too bad for the tree and for your roof, but I guess you will have a lot of firewood...!

Well, actually they hauled the whole tree away. I thought about having them cut it and leave some for firewood, but I live in Florida and we have .. maybe .. two fires a year. I'm probably going to change it over to a gas fireplace so we can get more use out of it, but I have to bury a tank somewhere as no one uses gas around here.

The tree was a beauty .. I had a few VERY experienced tree guys look at it over the years and all of them said that it was the biggest maple they've ever seen. The weird thing is: I just called a tree guy last week to come out and give me an estimate to cut it down, although it was still very healthy. He was supposed to come out Monday (yesterday).

I suspect that tree knew what you were about to do, and beat you to it by committing suicide and crunching your house...
