litterfree...good cat, bad cat

Jeff has two cats: a good cat and a bad cat. Which is which? Well, that depends on what we're talking about.

In relation to the Litterfree, Shadow is a bad cat. He got ill shortly after Jeff purchased the Litterfree and has developed negative associations with the product. He won't use it. He's a high anxiety animal to begin with so it is no surprise that he has disappointed us.

Jeff's good cat, in this instance, is Harley (pictured above). Harley has no issues with the Litterfree and used it as intended. He is still a favored kitty because of this.

The moral, some cats can't hack the Litterfree. It works as long as your cat is mentally stable, unlike Shadow. A normal cat, like Harley, is adaptable to the new technology.

Actually, Shadow used it for #1 but not #2.

I remember back in high school my Global Issues teacher told us a story about his friend. The guy went to Japan, and tried to use one of their high-tech toilets. First of all, he was surprised to see that there was no toiled paper. So he sat on the toilet, did his thing, got a little bored and started to look around. He found a little button on the wall, and since he had nothing better to do, he pushed it. A jet of warm water under pressure made him fly right out of the cabin. I bet he is just as paranoid about using high-tech toilets as Shadow is. :)

Help! good cat, bad cat

Postby Totoro » Wed Apr 09, 2003 5:49 pm

Okay, this is really driving me nuts. Big Kitty uses Litterfree no problem. Used it the first day I brought it home and installed it. The only grief he gives me is he is pretty vocal inbetween cycles. He prefers a clean litter box and gets ornery when he needs to go again and it is not clean. Since I build my life around my cats (who doesn't) I have complied with his requests and I will do a manual cycle and/or adjust the cycle times so he can use a clean box. He's really good with the mind control.

Okay, my problem is that Little Kitty does NOT use Litterfree. She will go right in front of the litter box. Why can't she just step inside? She's right there. Just a few more inches and Bam! She will hit the target. In the meantime, I come home every afternoon to find a little present for me to clean up. I think she does #1, but refuses to do #2 in the box. Can anyone help me figure out what I can do to help Little Kitty?

I don't think she is scared of the box because she will go check it out and watch when it goes through the wash cycle.

Good luck! Think like a cat for a moment... Does little kitty always bury #2 throughly? Litterfree pellets are not much like litter (or anything a cat might use in the wild.) They don't cover waste well. It sounds to me like little kitty is telling you that the litterfree isn't good enough. I think this is a basic flaw with the litterfree.

We've had a Litter Robot for a few weeks now, and so far so good. I know at least two, if not all three, of our cats are using it now. I still have two other litterboxes in the house, and I'm letting them "pile up" while the litter robot stays clean, to encourage the cats to go in there. They're not used to covered litterboxes. This trick seems to be working.

update on bad kitty

The situation has improved somewhat with adding a second litter box. Thanks Jeff for that suggestion. At least she has someplace appropriate to go instead on the floor.
