This is a curious problem. However, reading this forum, it sounds like there are alternatives to both the pellets and the cleaning solution (that are probably a lot cheaper than the "real thing" anyway).
I just bought one of these things last week and am amazed at how well it works so far. The various shortcomings noted by others don't trouble me at all (e.g. noise - it's in the basement, never hear it; smell - haven't noticed anything in particular, and certainly compared to a traditional catbox it's a lot better). My cats took to it easily after a one-day transition and it seems to live up to all it's claims. At this point I can't imagine going back to a litter-based solution (either "manual" or a sweeper-type device).
I'd love to hear from people who have used alternates proposed for pellets and solution and how well they works. Any long-term problems? Online sources? Personally, I have no problem owning an orphaned device as long as I can get ahold of the maintenance supplies in some form. I may just pick up a spare one on ebay in case it breaks one day
