At the end of my rope

The Litterfree has been discontinued, but it still has a loyal following. Ask questions or share tips here.

At the end of my rope

 I' so glad I stumbled across this forum!

I love the Litterfree but think I'm gonna have to go back to the Littermaid. One of my 2 cats was using the box fine and the other would only pee in there. Now, they both will pee in there but are pooping on the carpet.

I was getting great customer support from the company, but they seem to be out of business as the phones are disconnected. I did as the said and tried using the box with regular litter for weeks and then gradually putting granules in there to acclimate the cats.

I agree with everyone in that it's the pellets the cats don't like. Too bad because I think it's a fantastic product!

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks!!

Try the LitterRobot

If your cats are welcoming a machine, but not that machine, try the LitterRobot. You can read the reviews for yourself in that part of the forum.

It has been working well with our three cats pre-move. It has provided a much improved litter situation for us. Post-move we're waiting to find the power supply - it is in one of those boxes. When we find it, we'll start the real tests.

Many cats just can't stand those pellets. Many humans hate messing w/ a litterbox. I find the LitterRobot to be the happy solution that suits both species -- the cats get normal litter and we get a machine that works well.

The LitterMaid is much cheaper, but it may not work as well. See the posts regarding the LitterMaid and you'll get a catalog of those problems.

Good luck.

Jeff,

Thanks for the reply. I actually ordered the robot this morning and will continue to use the litterfree until I receive the new unit. I called PetSmart and they said I could return it as long as I have the receipt.

Good luck finding your robot in the boxes!

My 6 cats have no problem using my 2 Litterfree boxes at all. However, I agree that the pellets may be a problem for some cats!

One could easily replace the pellets with rounded plastic beads of at least 3 MM in diameter (any smaller, and they will be sucked into the pump that empties the unit). The rounded beads will not be as rough on the cats feet, and should provide about the same amount of effectiveness in dissolving fecal material, since it appears to be an agitation and impact rather than cutting process.

I am also very concerned that the company seems to be out of business - they are not answering their phones or responding to email at all.

This is going to make it difficult to obtain cleaning solution, but another person suggested the use of Roccal-D, a standard veterinary disinfectant that is readily available at many pet and animal supply outlets - you can do a google search for it. It appears that this is the same ingredient that was being used in the cartridges we were buying, and those cartridges are refillable.

Roccal-D is diluted at 3/4 oz per gallon of water, and each cartridge holds about 40 oz of solution or about 1/3 of a gallon, so each cartridge would contain about 1/4 oz of Roccal-D.

Roccal-D costs about $ 60 - 70 dollars per gallon, so you could make a LOT of solution with one gallon - about 512 cartridges, by my calculations. This is a lot better than $ 20.00 per cartridge!

I'm not really interested in the Litter Robot at this point, because I STILL don't want to have to buy cat litter!

If anyone has any information regarding the status of the manufacturer of the Litterfree unit, PLEASE contact me - thanks!

I don't have any information regarding the status of the company. However, I do have a used (cleaned/disinfected) unit for sale, as well as 1.5 boxes of pellets and 3 bottles of solution. Make an offer ;) The Litter Robot is working out much better for my cats.
