I am reusing the original cleaning solution container filled with distilled water and essential oils. These oils are 100% therapeutic-grade and are GRAS by the US FDA as a dietary supplement. These oils have the ability to kill bacteria by disrupting their life cycle. And unlike conventional antibiotic drugs, essential oils are 'probiotic': they not only kill pathogenic bacteria, but they tend to leave beneficial bacteria intact.
I never have to remove the container from the unit after I cut a small hole in the container. Then I use a funnel to fill it with distilled water and essential oils and cover the hole with duct tape. I mix the water and the oils in a jug before pouring it into the container.
The essential oils I use are Purification and (pick one) Lemon or Rose. Lemon contains 68 percent d-limonene. It may serve as an insect repellent and may be beneficial for the skin. Add a few drops to distilled water to deodorize and sterilize the air, and the pellets.
Rose has a beautiful fragrance that is intoxicating and aphrodisiac-like. Rose helps bring balance and harmony.
My cats don't seem to mind when I use any of the oils. All the oils are GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) by the US FDA. All the oils can be taken internally as a dietary supplement. However, Lemon (citrus oils) should NOT be applied directly to skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight within 72 hours. It is okay to use it when diluted.
I haven't had any problems and the air smells much better now. If you would like to try some oils go to http://www.youngliving.us. You can become a preferred customer for FREE. PS - I forgot to mention that I have three cats, two 10 year old females and a 7 year old male. They have been using a standard litter box their entire life until I purchased a LitterFree in January 2004. I didn't know that the company had gone out of business. To get them to use the Litter Free box, I placed their old litter box next to it. Once the old box needed cleaning I removed it completely. Then I turned off the auto clean function on the LitterFree. Whenever it needed cleaning I turned it on by hand. Whenever the cats used the basement floor, I sprayed Febreeze on the area and placed a couple of Bounce dryer sheets on it. Now they use the LitterFree box all the time.
I also use oils on my pets as well as my entire family. One cat had a small burn above her eye from sleeping against a space heater in the bathroom. She spends the entire winter there. I applied only Young Living Lavender oil to the burn twice a day. Other lavender oils are made from hybrid plants which aren't as pure and effective. Within a few days it was looking better. Within a week it was completely healed with no scar. I also use it on my cuts, no scabs or scars - even with an inch long cut on my chin. It stopped the bleeding and healed completely within four days.
Our Yellow Lab gets an ear infection every year. It smells gross and when she shakes her head discharge flys everywhere. I applied Lavender to the ear (just the flap not the inner ear) twice a day and within a week her ear was healed. Both her ears are pink and clean now.
