Need more suggestions to get the cats into it

Postby Jake » Wed Mar 10, 2004 10:22 pm

Well, my LitterFree has been working fine for three weeks now, but none of the three cats want to go near it. I've sprayed Catnip spray into it, and one would rather eat the beads then use the box. I have yet to see any of the other two fo neat it. The first cat, Jake, has actually peed in it a few times, but that is it. I've placed fecal matter in from the old box, but this doesn't give them a hint. I let the old box get full until there is no more room for anything, and they still don't use the LitterFree. I remove the old box completely, and still no one will go into the LitterFree. But they do start to pee in the laundry basket, etc. Or they pee in the bathtub next to the LitterFree where the old box was. Put a new "old style" litterbox back out, and there is a line to use it! It's gotten to a point, that my wife and I are in arguments over this unit. She doesn't want the cats doing their business around the house, and I don't blame her, but I argue with another box out, they will never get used to the LitterFree being their only choice. Seems like the choice is going to be going back to old style litterboxes and this one going the way of my last two Littermaid pieces of junk, just to have some peace in the house again. Any last effort suggestions to get these cats in the box?

I'm going to add my $0.02 just to bump this a little and also to add my experience with the LF. I'm sure that you will get some more helpful responses from others in the next few days (I'm sure that they're like me .. only check here every few days for something new), but unfortunately mine is only based on my mixed results.

I have one who loves the LF. Now, she refused to use it at all for the first six weeks, and I had a full-scale revolt during that time from all 3 of my cats (I only had the LF set up, and had taken the old box away). They started going in the house, on the carpet. This went on for a couple of weeks. Long enough to ruin a couple of spots on the carpet. Then all of a sudden, one started using the LF, and the other two went back to the old litter box I had set back out.

Bottom line: my dream of never manually cleaning a litter box again has not occurred. I have two that refuse to go anywhere near the LF, and one who loves it. Granted, all of my cats are "seniors," and I think starting a young cat out on the LF would generate more success.

Good luck.
