JJ-
We tested the LitterFree last year and were not impressed. Though others on this site have had success, the noise and commotion of the LitterFree and the weird granuals were too much for our cats. Only one would use it and he went right back to the regular litter box a.s.a. he could. The other cat, our skittish cat, left us regular reminders of his "issues" with the LitterFree. For us? The LitterFree was a great idea that failed.
Luckily Jeff started running this forum and we found out about the LitterRobot. We read more about it and were attracted to the idea of using real litter with an automatic box. If you read the posts on this site, you'll understand why.
We are testing this unit currently. In general, it is working great with two out of three cats. We aren't sure if the the skittish one is using it yet. (Our testing center is moving, so our cameras can't be set up for monitoring, like they were last time.)
We haven't removed the old litter boxes and they are pretty nasty. We thought this was a better way to force the issue with our cats than just removing the boxes altogether.
The state of these other boxes makes the LitterRobot the only sane choice in litter, but we have one insane cat - so we're waiting to remove the boxes and have him use it before we call the LitterRobot a screaming success. (Although, if you don't have any skittish animals the LR should work great.)
In summary, I think the LitterRobot has great advantages over the other solutions. We never tried the LitterMaid, but all those rake clogging issues made it unappealing. Cost is its advantage. The LitterFree seems great to humans who like using indoor plumbing. Most cats subjected to it have thought otherwise. Read all the posts on this site - there are posts from those who have no problems. Judge for yourself.
The LitterRobot seems to register as a regular litter box with the cats. It uses regular litter and it stays clean. We have actually cut down on the litter costs in our house already. It stays pretty much smell free. It is easy to clean and truly minimizes your exposure to waste . It gets my recommendation so far.
Please check our posts in the LitterRobot section for more info on the testing so far.
