I really like this site. I only wish I had found it before I bought the Litterfree. But I still would have, I think. I am about 8 days into the set up of the Litterfree and so far the catz have faired okay. They have spent a couple of days in the bathroom and but they will survive. I was really excited the first night, after setting it up and doing a test run, Frack (the Big boy, 17lbs) jumped right in and urinated. He is the easily scared one while his sister Frick (litter mate and weighing in at a mere 8-9 lbs) is usually bolder. They both sat there and watched it run albeit in a very tensed posture. But, after a few days and a very dirty back-up litter box still no poop.
So in behind the closed door they went, especially after Frick got busted on an out-of-litter-box experience.
So after 3 days of lock up there finally was some solid waste. That was this morning so more to come on this adventure.
Frick and Frack have tried everthing. The have the ultimate in lazy owner. They have a dry food feeder (old stlye not the new pretty one) that can hold 25 lbs of feed and spin it out 4 times a day. I have tried many litters types, many litter boxes, thought about the toliet training method but when they were babes, I had no spare toliet to dedicate to their training.
They are reasonanly well balanced catz with a free quirks but I think the will get the swing of this box. This litter is not all that diffferent of feel then the the clear pearls that absorb the urine. and they used them. I actually used the spherical absorbing pearls in the Littermaid raking cat box. They didn't do half bad in it either. The other alternate litter I had used in the Littermaid, was stuff I bought at Harris Teeter when I lived in NC. It sounds similar to the corn husk litter but it was a BB sized litter which had a paper pulp core and had an outer coating of clay on it. It worked great in the Littermaid. But I ould not find it when I moved and it was pricey. I think the reason thse type litters work so well in the LitterMaid is because they are light. I have or I should say Frick and Frack have gone through three Littermaids over the years (they are 10), After the last one broke is when I started researching other litter alternatives and found the LitterFree and the Litter Robot. I went for the Litterfree because I don't want to buy litter any more nor scoop or even empty the pan. Any how I think the motors burn out on the Littermaid and it is worse with the heavier urine clumps then the solid waste, so with the silica-based pearls the liquid was absorded hence no clumps (Frick was so so on this litter) and the clay coated paper pulp litter was so much lighter even the urine clumps. (the size/volume of a 14lbs Scoop Away box weighed about 3 lbs in the clay coated pulp litter) Give those a try for those who are still using the LitterMaid.
However, If you are going to go with the Litterfree. When I decide to buy it I was shoppig around for the best price and found that it was petsmart.com at $279.00 but I went to Google.com and entered "petsmart and coupon" as the search string and came up with tons of hits. I found a coupon code for Petsmart.com that gave me 20% my online order so I actually got the Litterfree for $223.20
Sorry I babble for so long.
Great site and I hope it helps others. As I am still in my 30day trial.
