litterfree v littermaid

Postby Christine » Sat Jan 04, 2003 12:12 am

We've just been looking at the litterfree in Petsmart and decided to check online for other people's opinions of this machine. We have a littermaid at the moment and that isn't all it's cracked up to be. Poop gets stuck in the rake, the rake comes off the screws and then when it tries to deposit the litter it flicks it all over the bathroom. However I'm still not sure about the litterfree so will probably monitor the opinions on this site for some time before deciding whether to try it or not.

christine, I agree 100% with you on Littermaids shortcomings. We have 3 cats, 2 mainecoons and a persian. i got fed up with buying those expensive little trays all the time so I made a stand with 2 X 4 lumber and a box where the waste litter is dumped. I lined that with a litter box bag. I now can empty the box about once a week and use inexpensive bags now instead of those trays. That solved one problem. We use a great but expensive litter, (Everfresh, with activated charcoal) that keeps the odor down to nothing all week unless the unit clogs.

I saw the ltterfree unit at Petsmart yesterday. I think I'm going to try it for the 30 days. None of the complaints so far are anything I'm not dealing with now, plus I don't have to change the litter (YUCK!)

Another option

Its worth looking at the Litter Robot unit too...take a look at their website. The moderators of this forum have one on order and expect it soon. Just be careful as there are some people reporting that their cats have refused to go in the Litterfree and then chose other not so great locations to do their thing...sometimes continuing to do so even after the people switched back to a regular litter box.

This probably does not happen often, but it is worth keeping in mind in addition to the 30 day return policy. Truthfully this could happen any time one changes to one of these auto litter boxes, but I think the granules of the Litterfree may be a bit unnatural, just as I have heard the Littermaid scares some cats with its noise. The Litter Robot could be difficult for a cat that has never used an enclosed litter box.

Good luck!
