When my LitterMaid reached that awful limping stage, I broke down and bought the Litterfree. I've had it for about a week. It took some time to get the cats used to the idea of the litter (it's very different from the clumping litter they're used to) and to move the box, but the biggest problem will be getting them used to the schedule and to overcome their fear of it.

The LitterFree is LOUD! Very loud. Both of the cats are terrified of the noize. And the cats, who were used to something that would sense their presence and not rake if the box was occupied may now be terrified that the damned thing will go off when they're not expecting it. Petrified. Initially, it was fine - I set it up so I had to manually set it off so they could get used to the litter etc. Then I found the Auto button.

One slink around close to the box, but doesn't want to go into it. Given that at least one cat is now using an empty litter pan rather than brave the LitterMaid and one made a nice little lake in the bed (now covered by a plastic drop cloth - talk about comfortable)...

I've switched back to manual operation hoping they'll (or the problem cat if it's just one) will return to using it again. If they're not over this within the 30 day gaurntee, it's going back to the store.

Any other thoughts on overcoming the fear of the noize?

If your cats aren't completely weird and mentally damaged from life before your loving care, you may be able to get them acustom to the noise. If they are normal and just really freaked out by all this new litter gadgetry then talk to your vet. Our vet is shared by us and another couple. His solution to stress induced litter reactions (ie, peeing on your bed) is to give the cats a course of valium. The theory is that your cats have reached an anxiety level where they can't cope. The valium course will calm them down enough to where they can begin to cope with the new situation.

That is what we did with our cat who didn't like our new kitten and decided to show it. It works. It worked for our friends cat. I've heard it working for other people.

Talk to your vet. You'd be surprised how competent they are in dealing with your poor kitty's psychological issues.
