How to set up the bag/liner

Postby Sapling » Mon Nov 07, 2005 8:22 pm

I am considering buying an LR but I am a little concerned about the liner problems some people have been having. I have seen recommended in several posts that a larger bag should be used and the litter tray should be placed "completely inside the bag".

I don't have an LR sitting in front of me, so maybe that is part of the problem, but I can't picture how to do this. If the tray is inside the bag, doesn't it become covered with cat clumps?

Can anyone explain this for a cat lover with bad visualization skills? :D

Also, as an aside, how is odor control with this product? Is it possible to keep odor almost non-existent by using quality cat litter and liberal baking soda in the tray?

Literally, here's what I do.

1. Get large garbage bag.

2. Take drawer and put it in garbage bag. I put the drawer in so that the front part of the drawer (the part that has the "step") is peaking out of the mouth of the bag). I guess you could do it the other way too. I don't.

3. At this point the garbage bag is pulled pretty taut over the drawer. So you might be thinking, how the heck is waste supposed to collect in this thing?

4. If the bag is big enough, you should be able to smoosh the bag so that it conforms to the contours of the inside of the drawer. I usually use the clips to help keep the bag in place.

5. Shove drawer back into the litter robot. This is why I use the clips to keep the bag in place. Probably due to my ineptitude, if I don't use the clips, the bag becomes taut again when I shove the drawer in; it effectively reduces the holding capacity of the drawer. So I use the clips so that the bag stays in place!

That's about all I do.

The main trick is to make sure the bag is tight around the bottom of the drawer. That leaves maximum slack for the inside of the drawer. You can then flatten the bag around the inside of the drawer for maximum capacity and stuff the excess slack into the clips so the bag won't pulled up out of the drawer when you slide it in.

That is exactly what I ended up doing too :)

Mainly because occasionally I would end up with some pee on the step, so now I bought some large kitchen bag and like you said, put the whole drawer in it with the opening of the bag towards the front hanging over the step. Now I have no mess if the kitties miss and it is actually easier to change the bag.

One possible drawback: if you use a thick reenforced bag, the edges can drag along the bottom of the globe. Apparently the LR detects this as an obstruction and stops the motor. You have to make sure the edges of the bag don't stick up above the tray.

What do you mean "taut around the bottom". i.e. taut usaually means tight/pulled until its firm.
How are you getting it Taut? by using the clips?

I had some urine leakage inside the collector tray and im not sure how it got there. really gross tho.

Taut? I said tight, not taut.

Just make sure that all the extra bag slack is in the drawer where it will be of use and and not under the drawer where it will be wasted.
