Not a door, but a tunnel entrance for Litter Robot

Postby aronhk_md » Thu Jul 10, 2003 3:52 pm

I have designed a small tunnel entrance for the Litter Robot that is about 18 inches long. It is made out of black corrugated plastic drainage pipe that is 12 inches in diameter. I'm not sure where you can get this stuff, but construction crews use it when building new neighborhoods (thats how I got a piece).

The tunnel is mounted to a weighted, wide base stand. The stand allows the tunnel to basically butt up very close to the entrance, but not interfere with the rotation.

The cat comes out of the unit and enters the tunnel to exit, and litter that is flung (is that a word?....lol) out or stuck in paws drops into the deep corrugations in the pipe before the cat exits.

The biggest problem was weighting the wood frame stand, and for that I just used a plywood box built into the base of the stand, and about 10 pounds worth of concrete.

The tunnel itself has two wing nut/bolts on the bottom that I use to securely mount to the stand. I can easily remove it to dump the litter in the toilet.

All told, iit took me about an hour and a half to build, not including the varnishing. Now I will get to see if it actually works......lol

Sorry, I have been in transit and away from the computer for a few. Unfortunately I put this thing together in the few days I was home. I'm back at med school in the caribbean now, and I have no way to take a picture, though I should have thought of that before I left.

I won't be home now until December....so I don't think it will be anytime soon. My wife reports that it seems to be doing ok though, and at least hasn't stopped the thing from working. She does have to move it once a week to empty the tray.......we only have one cat. It is being kept in a closet to keep it out of sight. The only thing she says she wishes is that the closet were vented somehow. It doesnt smell terrible, but it is sort of a dead air kind of space.

In a few years when we build our own house I'm going to have to seriously consider the "perfect" cat bathroom....lol

Anyway, if you have any questions about how I built the thing I'll do the best I can to answer them.

I am so glad to know that I am not the only one who spends time considering what a "perfect cat bathroom" might be.
