First few days.....

Postby waffull » Sun Dec 26, 2004 11:01 pm

I received the unit 4 days ago. It took about 36 hours, but my cat finally took started using it, just as I was about to put his old litter box back down for him. I had removed it after 12 hours. So the poor kitty didn't go to the bathroom for almost 24 hrs. But he now uses it freely. He's still a bit freaked out about the noise/movement. Until tonight, I'd left it unplugged and only ran it when I was in there and could pet him. He was still running away and his ears pointed if he hears it.

Tonight I plugged it in and have just left. He's used it a couple of times since :)

The noise is a bit louder than I expected. It's quite loud during the first part of the cycle and quieter during the other two. I haven't taken a look at the unit since I put it together, but I would imagine that if some insullation was put around the lower portion (inside) that it would dampen the noise some more.

But I guess the noise is just something I'll have to get used to. One day I hope to be out of an apartment and into a house, where it would be less of an issue.

Anyway, I'm happy with the unit so far. I'll try to update you all on it as time goes on. We move on Thursday so hopefully he won't have any issues using the LR in the new apartment.

They recommend that you put the LR on some carpet to cut down on the noise transmission. I've found that a piece of cardboard works too.

Thanks. I'll get an old piece of carpet and try it in the new apartment. The noise woke me up this morning, but I'm not sure if I slept through a cycle during the night or not. I think I might end up putting it on a timer so it only cycles during the day. My fear is that, despite the safeguards, that if he happens to be in there doing business at the time the timer switches to the on position, it's going to start the cycle and scare the poor guy half to death...

Anyone have any experiences to share on this topic?

Thanks.

I had a cat go round and round in it. He is pretty small and was in there for a long time so I guess the robot thought he had left. About that time, the bot seemed to develop a mind of its own and would start going all by itself. There was some litter bits around the sensor part. I cleaned it real good and it never happened again. BTW, Milo stayed in the thing for the whole cycle! He just kept adjusting his feet so as to stay upright. I don't know why the goofball didnt jump out.

Let me give you a heads up so maybe you can avoid the mess the rest of us have had to deal with. Be sure to shake the drawer so that the clumps don't pile up directly under the unit. If you don't, you will have an AWFUL mess of smeared crap on the outside of the globe. Trust me, you don't want that. It is a b*tch to clean.

Update

Postby waffull » Wed Jan 05, 2005 3:27 am

Well we are now 6 days post move and I have moved the LR around the apt 3 times to try and find a good place for it. It sure is a big thing!!

Anyway, Chance uses it without a problem, it's doing it's job well, except that I do find a fair amount of clean litter in the disposal drawer.

I would definitely recommend the LR to anyone who has cats. I've shown it off to a few friends who have other automatic systems and they have been impressed. Is there any kind of referal fee or rewards program for sending people that buy an LR? That would be a nice addition:)

I think with a few improvements, I'm compiling a list of minor ones and will post at a later date, the LR could be the best thing since sliced bread, then again I don't eat a lot of sliced bread

Tracking litter is still my # 1 problem with having a cat. It's worse now because I have all hardwood floors. In my last apt, there was wall to wall carpeting so you didn't notice it much. But I think that's just part of having a cat.

Thank you to everyone in this forum for the advice and help while making my decision to get one and while getting my cat to use it:)

Take care,
Marc

I wish there was a referral program! But, instead, we run this crazy site out of the kindness of our hearts and with the help of a few angels.

This site is up there in the top 3 on the net, for me, that has been invaluable. Please don't go away! Your efforts are appreciated by many.

timer

Postby tchessie » Fri Feb 11, 2005 12:27 pm

Becasue of the noise, I have my LR on a timer, so it shuts off at 10pm and starts up again at 7 am. I'm never noticed if it tried to turn on while the cat was in it, but I think mine would just jump out anyway. What you do have to do, is check to make sure the timer didn't turn the LR OFF midcycle- because this will mean that the litter is not available and the globe will be upside down all night. You do not want this to happen- or your cats will let you know of their displeasure in the most nasty places! So I just check to see it is upright before I go to bed.
