Testing of most all litters in old and new litter-robots

Do you feel that this kind of individual, thorough, and objective-style testing of many litters is desired by the reader base?

Yes, it's long overdue and more useful than a reader compendium style.

No, I prefer the many-readers style since it is more popular-based.

Keep two things in mind:

1) If you make modifications to the unit, I'm sure it voids the warranty and money back gaurantee.

2) The way it was explained to me is that the bone is more expensive to make because the materials have to be cleaned and colored where as the material to make the black is more abundant and thus cheaper.

Enjoy and let us know how it goes.

Any word on test results yet?

Postby gadgetguy » Mon Feb 14, 2005 10:46 pm

Is there anything to report on this litter test yet? Is it at least still going on or was it abandoned?

Research results

Postby webnessa » Thu Apr 07, 2005 2:26 pm

I am days away from buying a LR and would love to know how the WBCL faired in the study. I believe it's the only environmentally-friendly, wheat/corn-based cat litter being studied. (Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

How's the research coming along? I think it'd be very helpful to the forum for an update.

Thanks for doing this!

Litter Test

Postby gadgetguy » Thu Apr 07, 2005 2:52 pm

I have a feeling this test was never done. I can see there being delays, but if it were still in progress I would think he would post a message once in a while telling us the study is still going on. I am not holding out any hope.

LR and WBCL

Postby 4Munki » Tue Apr 18, 2006 3:58 pm

I am days away from buying a LR and would love to know how the WBCL faired in the study. I believe it's the only environmentally-friendly, wheat/corn-based cat litter being studied. (Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

I have been using WBCL for almost a year on non-automated boxes. I like it for it's environmental/cat friendliness.

I got my LR on April 7, 2006 (ordered March 27th).
I've been using WBCL in the LR for about two weeks and I don't have any complaints. Works great! There was an issue with the odor but I remedied that with arm & hammer cat litter odor control baking soda. Sprinkle on bottom of fresh bag and leaving the box in the drawer helps. LR wastes very little litter so my 34 lb. bag will go a long, long way. I had 4 kittens I fostered through HOPE since they were born. Three of them got adopted a few months ago and I am left with one (Munki) which I am keeping. Before I decided to keep her, I did research on automated litter boxes because it's either that, or no cat for me. I am thinking about adopting another cat for Munki to play with since I don't have to worry about cleaning the litterbox twice a day like before.

I am very happy with my LR with WBCL so far. I will post an update if there are any issues that may come with time.

I've been using WBCL for as long as I've had my Litter Robot (last June or so) and it works just fine. I think it might stink slightly more than the average litter (I even get the multicat formula), but my cats like it better and I just keep a can of air freshener next to the box for when it gets nasty. I'll have to try the baking soda thing... where does one find this litter odor control baking soda?

odor control

Postby 4Munki » Tue Apr 25, 2006 8:57 pm

keisuke,

I got it at petco at the litter box liner section. It turns out that the baking soda is not enough. I can smell both the baking soda and the ammonia at the same time after a few days.

I am trying this solution next: http://www.litterbox-central.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=881&highlight=odor+control. I will post an update in a couple of weeks or so.

I asked a similar question on the forum and did not get a response... I think it depends on what you want in a litter... I am using World's Best Cat Litter for multiple cats... it clumps harder than the regular stuff and I can flush it into my septic system but its unscented (smells like a feed store) and doesn't cover smells as well probably as scented litters. It doesn't stick much to the Robot -- a problem I found with another litter I tried.

Here are some suggestions that I picked up from the forum while I was waiting for my LR:
SCOOP AWAY MAXIMUM CLUMPING FOR MULTIPLE CATS
EverFresh with Activated Charcoal
Tidy Cats Scoop for Multiple Cats, Immediate Odor Control Formula , with "New" Tidy Lock technology.

(NOT SURE YOU SHOULD TRY THIS ONE but I am currently trying Ultra Pearls -- no perfume and absorbs urine very well including the odor -- in a regular cat box and I really like them. I am not sure how well they would work in the Robot but I may try them in it in the future.)

Experiment until you find something you and the cats like! Good luck with your Robot. I hope the cats and you like it!

Thanks for the information....

Bengals... how are they? I heard they have to be removed a few generations so they are tame...

Bengals are regular cats with their own unique charm... They have long bodies, smaller heads. Some will fetch (Nuba fetches when he's in the mood...), some like water (Zen always tests the water bowl with her paw -- which gets the water dirty -- before she drinks and she likes to drink out of the faucet --), some like high places (Zen has made it to the ceiling jumping from bookcase to bookcase... and is currently up there trying to catch a Daddy Longlegs), and they are very alert, aware of their environments. They like to get into things, like my desk drawer and remove stuff. Nuba used to take off with the fish food and hide it under the bed. And my two kitties are both messy eaters with the dry cat food... strange... These cats cause more mess with their dry cat food than they do with the litter box! My other cats never left a drop of food.

But they are regular kitties -- usually at least four generations or more removed from the Asian Leopard (AL) which is their ancestor. The AL is a small shy wildcat. The Bengals are bred to be exotic looking but friendly and loving toward people and other animals. I've had cats most of my life and these kitties have wonderful alert and lively personalities. They seem to understand the word "no". I have also had some luck with the words, "stay" and "down". They tend to get it if you are firm with them. Of course then there are those moments when they ignore me (and what I want) completely... typical cats! :D

Fresh step with crystals was good for a clay litter. So a bit of dust but almost no odor. I tried crystals alone but it didn't work for me. But my cat drinks a lot. I think it never had a chance to dry out since it was enclosed.

Your Bengal sounds a lot like my Bombay. He fetches like a dog.. Tried to get into everythng.... has to have attention at all times, and get jealous of my other cat.. and ALSO opens doors... All my doors have handle type doorknobs and he figured out how to jump up and open them... Now He likes to go into kitchen cabinets and run around with things like the duster in his mouth... He is pretty big and my other cat is a bit heavy.. so I hope they will be OK with the Robot, which was just delivered today.

You have to try the new Tidy Cats w/ tidy lock. Zero dust, zero odor. Was using generic brands until wife brought this home. You won't believe it until you see for yourselves.

I just bought a litter robot and would love to know the results of this study.

Have they been posted someplace?

I don't know what kind of litter to buy...and I am concerned about what I've read about the smell, I've been spoiled by the cat genie for six months, there is no smell from the cat genie.
