Looks just like my LitterWorks cabinet for my Littermaid

Postby BeckyThompson » Sun Feb 26, 2006 9:28 am

I guess this concept applies to almost any self-cleaning litter box, they need more waste capacity!! There is a similar product for Littermaid that is commercially available for all you people who don't have such a brilliant handyman around! Their website is http://www.litterworks.com

I also wanted more Litter Robot capacity. But I was too lazy to build something. So I bought a Suncast storage seat at Lowes. It has a flip open lid with sides of the seat lid going around 3 sides. I had to cut the side parts off with my roto-zip, so the top was all flat. Then a hole for the bag. Litter robot fits it pretty well.

Now to see if the cat can get used to climbing up to get in?

I noticed the Suncast web has some other boxes that look already flat on top that might be even easier to use. Check them out under deck boxes.

What I need

Postby Gary599 » Wed May 17, 2006 12:28 am

I have 5 cats, and they seem to go one after the other in the LR.

I have one picky cat that I guess if he smells the stuff from the draw he decides to crap on the kitchen floor instead of using the LR.

A few posts back I see the LR in a closet; gee that’s a cool idea. But what I really need to do is increase the waste draw part. For me, going on a vacation is a nightmare cause I have to break out the old regular standard cat box, just to make sure there are no accidents.

Just on a daily thing, Im sick and tired of changing the bag every one to two days or pulling the draw out to shift the waste to the front so it does not stack up in the drawer.

Anyway...I'm defiantly going to look into cutting a hole into the LR draw and getting the LR up on something to increase the waste container.

modifications to LR

Postby TheRouseCats » Thu May 25, 2006 2:24 pm

We just got our LR Unit on the 9th.. so we are NOWHERE near the 18mo warranty limit.. but the modifications for waste capacity sound neat.. and clever!

Perhaps by the time our new LR turns 2yrs (assuming we can get our little boy to start peeing IN the unit exclusively) there may be some sort of LR drawer extension available to Litter Robot owners?? (although not sure how they they would do that unless they make a premolded step up drawer with a hole in the center).

Right now we are fine with our Litter Robot.. We let the drawer go for a week without emptying it.. and whoo did it STINK.. (they were also using their Booda Dome for stuff as well so we thought maybe since they were using both and I put a larger bag in there it would be ok.. also whenever you open the drawer it emits stinkiness which repulses our boy cat).

I think as long as we remember to change the bag every 3days it should be ok.. we only have the 2cats. We might revisit modifying the capacity, but ONLY after the LR unit is out of warranty..

cool ideas though. =)

Sorry, I had to chuckle about that. As a new owner the thought of only having to deal with the drawer is so appealing. You obviously have not had the fun experience of coming home and finding poo smeared along that track on the outside of the globe, with those little indents all filled with poo. The clean up is horrible! That is something you won't forget very quickly.

THat happens when the poo stacks up at the back of the drawer and gets too tall for the globe to clear it when it rotates. It is a royal pain in the a$$ to clean, as most here can testify to. You will certainly be more vigilant about that drawer after a couple of incidents with poop globe. Even if you don't empty it, it is a good habit to get into, as you walk by the thing just give the drawer a quick open/close to redistribute the poo so it's not stacked in the back. That is the reason people have been coming up with ideas about the modifications.

bleh.. that DOES sound nasty! =) I have taken to opening & closing the drawer some and we're still working the bags out (we have the large 13gal kitchen bags we got from Costco but those are too big for the LR and the 8gal ones are too flimsy.. )

I'm just greatful the 2 of them are using it for all their ellimination needs! =) technically I guess we're at the 'toss out the box' stage! =) *hurray!*

I use the 13 gal bags and they work fine. Kind of baggy on the bottom, but the top fits good around the edge of the drawer.

I made the modification last weekend, using scraps of lumber and plywood I had left over. Created a simple box with one open end (made a flat cross-brace on the bottom). Cut a 10-inch hole in the waste drawer, an 11-inch hole in the bottom of the unit, and a 12-inch hole in the top of the box. The holes get bigger because I didn't want waste catching in the different levels.

Now I simply slide an old litter box tray into the box and it works great, no more having to wiggle the Litter-Robot box. I also have another box in front of it for the cats to use as a step.

The bottom of the master unit is very difficult to cut through, but the effort is worth it.

Use a jigsaw!

Postby vermithrax » Mon Feb 19, 2007 11:51 am

Hey guys. :) I made a similar modification the other day... I didn't want a really big drawer like that, but I did want a BIGGER drawer...

I found that the easiest way to do all the cutting, by the way, was with a jigsaw! Just drill a hole where you want to start, and you can jigsaw your way through everything without a problem. :)

To make the holes nice and round, I took a piece of string and screwed it into a hole that I had drilled in the middle of the object, and then tied a pencil (or grease pencil) to the other end... The string was 1/2 the length of the diameter of the circle I was going to cut, so if I was going to cut a 12" circle, I used a 6" piece of string... Then, you just run the pencil around the string, and it draws a perfect circle. :)

Anyhow, here's the result... I bought a plastic, stackable drawer from Home Depot for about $20 (CDN), and transformed it. :)

Here is the completed modification with a little step-stool for the cats to climb up to it with:

And here it is without the step-stool:

Hope this gives someone else some ideas! :) It was easy, only took me about 30 minutes. I used a dremel tool for some of it, but found that it was a heck of a lot easier once I got the jigsaw going. :D

Piece of cake... :)

When you make a post, you can just put it in like this:

Code: Select all
[img]http://www.thepicture.com/mypicture.jpg[/img]

Replacing, of course, the URL with the one that contains your picture. :)

So basically, just putting in the img tags will do it. :)

OK, that's what I thought, however it didn't seem to work here:

Yeah, that won't work because those images aren't a jpg or gif... Those are actually shown "inside" a webpage... I'd recommend maybe uploading them to http://www.photobucket.com or something similar... :) I think (though I'm not sure) that you can do it with flickr too... All you need is to have a URL that ends in .jpg, .gif, or .png... :)
