Cleaning the unit?

Postby YamahaYZFR6 » Mon Mar 15, 2004 2:25 pm

I am currently on my second littermaid. First one lasted about 6 months, second one quit after 1 week. When it worked, I would take it apart and clean it once per month. Discarding the old litter and replacing it with new.
How is the litter robot to take apart and clean? Also I add litter to the litter maid every couple days. Is this something that you also do for the Robot? (Found this forum looking for fixes for my littermaid and now am seriously considering buying the robot.) Thanks!

How often do you clean your Litter Robot?

Postby Lauren » Tue Mar 16, 2004 12:27 pm

When I had the rake type litter box, I felt like it needed cleaning every week, and then it was difficult to clean because all the electronics are right in the box, so you can't submerse it. I clean my LR globe out every other month or so for my two cats.

I thought they meant how often do you clean out the drawer. We clean the actual unit only once a month or so...

I meant how often do you clean the globe, also are there any other parts that need to be cleaned besides the drawer.

super easy cleaning

The globe is really the part that gets the use, so it needs the cleaning. I've had mine for about 2 months, and I've only had to clean it one time. That was because I used a type of litter that left gooey bits of yuckiness every where. I just let the litter level get low, and then emptied it. I sat the empty globe in/on our laundry tub and put some litter box enzymatic cleaner in it. I then just rinsed/wiped it out like any other litter box. There's no electronics in the globe, so you can just give it a good cleaning. When it's warm enough here in Michigan, I'll just take it outside and hose it down. I'll probably do that every 3 or 4 months. About once a week, I try to clear out the litter that may have fallen into the lower part of the unit. I sit the tray on the floor and try to dump the loose litter into the tray, and then empty the tray into the globe... I'm really trying to not waste litter. Any that I can't easily dump into the tray (because of the "lip"), I just vacuum out. I empty the waste tray daily since I have 6 cats, and do a daily loose litter cleanup if one of my kids has kicked any out. Overall, it's pretty easy to keep up. I was so busy with my two littermaids and my nightly half-hour ritual, that I feel like I should be doing more. It really just takes care of itself and needs a cleaning now and then.

I've had my LR I don't a month or two. I had some fresh step and it does make kind of big clumps and with 2 cats I empty every 4-5 days. I also get tracking on the step and just take the hose to my vacuum and get it off. My question is I haven't thoroughly cleaned it yet until tonight. I was getting like some litter stuck I guess it was wet from pee i don't know stuck to the rubber and a little small clumps stuck to the screen. And tonight was a clump of poop that didn't make it in the bag why's that? Anyway I hit empty all and wiped it around with a warmn rag all over and now I am going to put it back and refill it since it's dry. Is the screen suppose to be open on one side not screwed down? My screen was lifting up on one side which gave me the oppurtunity to wipe under there but I wasn't sure if it was suppose to be like that or not. Both of my cats have been using it fine except for once about a week ago one pooped on the floor by the old box and later that night peed. I have 2 cats so I don't know which one did it and why. But other than that there using it fine. I think maybe one of mine is not squatting good when peeing. And one was in there the other day just digging trying to dig into the litter like she did in the old box for a long time.

Other then that I haven't had any problems and I like the box just great. Not scooping every night is so wonderful. I also bought some cat attract litter so I usually put some of that on top just to use it up. I think I will try my scoop away this time. I have a box of it also. I am glad everyone likes there LR. I know I do!! Rose

Clean the globe?

Postby princess » Mon May 10, 2004 5:07 pm

hi
makes sense that we should but we haven't and we've had these litter-robots for a long time. i'm gonna say it might be nice to give the robots a good cleaning every three months - like in a perfect world how one should use fresh towels every day...but honestly, we've had our robots for one year and the new one for about 6months and we haven't cleaned out the globes. I LOVE this product. i think because the cycle goes so soon after the sides get soiled by the male kitty sprayers the litter rolls over everything and all get absorbed and cleaned in the cycle.

Well mine really needed cleaning. Some liiter was stuck to the top on the rubber and the screen had a few little pieces stuck to it and inside on the globe. I add a cup of litter every couple days but mine looked like there was hardly no litter in it at all. So I just stuck mine in the bath tub and rinsed it out and used a warm rag. I made sure it was good and dry before I added litter. But adding the litter from the box made a mess andlitter spilled all over my floor. But now it's clean and full of litter and I am hoping maybe every 3 months or so I will have to do this. That I wont mind. I still love this thing also. Rose

I envy people who only have to clean their robots once a month. I need to clean it every week, or it starts to smell really bad. (I hose it down, use 99% alchohol and enzyme solution to try to get the smell out.) I have two cats - one with renal failure so the drawer needs to be emptied every day (I can go for one day and a half with Sweep Away, but anything else, it needs to be emptied within 24 hours or it will pile up too much and the dirty litter starts getting stuck on the top of the drawer and onto the globe.) Also, my cats, for some reason, pee on the rubber part of the robot inside, so that explains the smell and requring cleaning of the robot so often. I have the globe filled pretty full with litter (it is noisier but what else can I do to try to prevent the cats from peeing on the rubber? I am hoping this will ease the rubber peeing problem to some degree. One of my cats barely goes in and pees real quick and gets out, so she is not aiming or what)

I was really hoping this will solve all my litter problems, but unfortunately, it hasn't happend yet. ONLY IF THEY QUIT PEEING ON THE RUBBER!!!!

I saw one of my cats in there the other day facing the wrong way. I found I guess where they had not been aiming right also and had peed some on the rubber and I had litter stuck to the top. This happened several weeks after I had it. I had mine over a month maybe two before I noticed it and cleaned it. I looked in there one day and saw how gross it was on the rubber part plus little pieces were stuck in the screen it needed a wipe down and there was hardly any litter in there. And I had been putting a cup full in there every few days. I have 2 cats and can get by with probably 5 days or so but I change it usually twice a week. I still thing it's a great invention and I love it. I really hope tings change for you. I don't knwo how to make your cats aim right. I've looked inside mine since I cleaned it and it seems ok nothing stuck to the top.

I just took my globe and rinsed in my bathtub and wiped it around. I didn't have a hose where I could take it outside and spray the thing.
