The globe is really the part that gets the use, so it needs the cleaning. I've had mine for about 2 months, and I've only had to clean it one time. That was because I used a type of litter that left gooey bits of yuckiness every where. I just let the litter level get low, and then emptied it. I sat the empty globe in/on our laundry tub and put some litter box enzymatic cleaner in it. I then just rinsed/wiped it out like any other litter box. There's no electronics in the globe, so you can just give it a good cleaning. When it's warm enough here in Michigan, I'll just take it outside and hose it down. I'll probably do that every 3 or 4 months. About once a week, I try to clear out the litter that may have fallen into the lower part of the unit. I sit the tray on the floor and try to dump the loose litter into the tray, and then empty the tray into the globe... I'm really trying to not waste litter. Any that I can't easily dump into the tray (because of the "lip"), I just vacuum out. I empty the waste tray daily since I have 6 cats, and do a daily loose litter cleanup if one of my kids has kicked any out. Overall, it's pretty easy to keep up. I was so busy with my two littermaids and my nightly half-hour ritual, that I feel like I should be doing more. It really just takes care of itself and needs a cleaning now and then.
