Male cat used successfully for one year now pees butt out...

I have been using the litter robot for a year and a half succesfully for a year and a half. I had to get the fence for the two males I had but that kept their butts inside. One of my males died last year and the other 8 year old male is quite large he's a British Shorthair and almost 18 lbs. I washed the robot out occasionally but I think I had let it lapse a bit. The three females never peed outside though, just Ashford. So after scrubbing it with everything I could think of bleach, Natures Miracle, Comet and let it airdry outside, I finally decided to buy a new larger version of the litter robot the one with the bubble. I also got a new drawer since the old one stunk. I put brand new litter inside tonite and watched. The girls jumped in and "baptized" it immediately. Then I cautiously watched Ashford approach and he stood on the step with both front paws inside as well as one back leg inside and one on the step (this has been his pose for the past 4 months) and its only for pee. For poops he goes all the way in.

Has any one else who owns the LR had this problems with males? (No offense to the gentlemen humans out there!) Its just my females love it its so clean and shiny and Ashford is peeing outside just like he did with the old one yesterday. So that kind of blows my theory out of the water that it was just the stink of the old one?

If anyone has any suggestions on why my male would use this for a year the correct way and then stop. I know he is a bit heavier and thicker than he was two years ago, he's a bit chubby, so I took off the fence etc but still no go.

Upset at the thought of having to go back to regular boxes and scooping after almost 2 years,
