Very small cat

Postby turtle_frenzy » Thu Feb 25, 2010 8:09 pm

Does anyone have a litter robot that has a cat that weights around 6 lbs? Mine is between 5.5 and 6 lbs, but I think closer to 6. She also likes to "hop" in and out of her current standard open litter box, so I am not sure if she will step onto the sensor all of the time. Has this been an issue for anyone? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hello!

Welcome to the LBC. My son has a cat that is very small and when she was a kitten she could activate the LR.
At the time when she was very small they would monitor the LR and manually turn it on until she was about 4 lbs.
Your kitty should be heavy enough because it doesn't need that much weight to push the LR onto the sensor AND it can
be adjusted to be more or less sensitive. If your kitty is a digger she will not have a problem to activate the LR.
For my cats I put a Rubbermaid step stool in front of the LR and this stops them from hopping out and helps them to
turn around since they are long bodied. Putting something in front of the LR like a step stool should help with
your kitty hopping in&out. Good luck.......the LR is an excellent litter box!!

One of your questions seems to address whether the cat sensor will trip if your cat jumps in and out of the box without touching the lip of the wast drawer. If that's part of what you're asking, perhaps the following will help.

The cat sensor is attached to the base of the LR at the very front, and extends a very short distance to the floor. Where it touches the floor, there is a round plastic foot like what you would find on many chairs. The sensitivity of the switch is adjusted by turning the foot a few clicks in either direction.

It's a spring loaded switch that is triggered by extra weight inside the LR. As soon as your cat enters the LR, the extra weight should trip the sensor. So, it's not necessary for your cat to step on the protruding lip of the waste drawer.

Of course the sensor will need to be adjusted for the weight of your cat, which is easy enough.

This information applies to my older LRI, but my understanding is the cat sensor on the LRII model work exactly the same way. If not, someone will likely speak up.

i have 5 cats currently using my LR2, 2 of those being slender devon rexes, my little girl hops in and as she weighs so little she doesnt trigger the sensor, even though it is set to its most sensitive, I just periodically glance at it and if there is anything in it i manually cycle it, although usually one of the others hops in and triggers the sensors before i get the chance

If your cat doesn't weigh enough yet, you can make the sensor easier to trip by propping the back of the LR up by putting a half inch book under the back of base. That makes it lean forward a little bit.

A six pound cat should trip the sensor without problems. I have had little kittens with a lot of bounce activate the LR. The newest one doesn't. She is very dainty (well, some of the time... she's also been known to swing by one paw from the belt of the robe hanging on the bathroom door so....) I just push the cycle button when I notice she has used the LR. Pretty simple.
