Will a litter robot work for my cat?

Postby MSmith7344 » Sat Nov 14, 2009 12:22 am

We have four cats and I'm seriously considering a litter robot. 3 of the cats should be fine with it, the 4th might have problems both with weight and stool issues.

I don't think out two girls would have a problem--the older one is petite. The younger one is still growing, but she is over the five pound minimum. I'm also pretty confident that our oldest male would fit if he decided to use it--he's 14 pounds, but he's long and well proportioned for his weight, with just a little excess weight around the tummy since he became a senior.

Our other male cat though, is, well, round. He actually has a small frame, which makes his 16 pounds look even more ridiculous, but so far we haven't gotten anywhere with having him lose weight. He isn't much over the recommended weight, but I'm seriously wondering how well he'd fit through the door. I know some people with larger cats use the litter robot, but are those cats big, long cats or beach balls like my baby? Any thoughts? My other question may be a little gross, but this is a litter box forum. This same cat has megacolon. Because of this and the medicine he takes, he can vary between large hard stools (the megacolon) and diarrhea (the side effects of the medicine). Obviously we try to keep him somewhere in between, but it's a difficult balancing act. Does anyone have any experience with how well the Litter Robot copes with "loose stools"? I don't want to end up with difficult to clean smears all over the interior of the globe.

Hi -- I can't address any concerns about the rounded :D cat but regarding the loose stools, I have had several cats with loose stools and the LR performed fine. No major messes. Course, the LR's performance also depends on the clumping litter being used. You'll want to wipe out the inside of the globe at least once a week and perhaps more often depending on the number of cats that use it.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm seriously thinking about trying it. If Tux doesn't fit I could always return it. (My husband was laughing at me when he saw me trying to measure the cat's width.) He's definitely intrigued by the idea of the litter robot though. I do the scooping, but he does the weekly full box changes and he's all for making those happen less frequently.

Read my thread under JUST GOT MINE for more info on getting them to use it. My large cat won't go near it mostly because it would be too much work for him and he doesn't like a covered box or small spaces.
As to the loose stools, one of the cats using it has what I call soft stools and the clumping litter is awesome at handling it and dumping it in the box. Not messy at all.

Get it and try it....they give us 90 days to try it out for a reason....it takes a while for kitties to make the change. I noticed they used to have only 30 days and I'm guessing they used to get a lot returned in that time frame...90 is much more reasonable for this product.
