Old litter robot, older kitty... New problem.

Postby RacerChik » Wed Oct 14, 2009 9:29 pm

Hi. I have like the LR version 1.0. lol I bought it in 2003 according to some of my older posts.
I have 2 cats (1 male, 1 female) and they have both been using it with no issue since 2003.

Suddenly, my male cat refuses to pee in the LR. He will poop in it, but he will not pee. He pees on the floor right in front of or otherwise near the LR, so he knows where he is supposed to be. When this issue started, I took him to the vet and he has been treated for a urinary tract infection.

What do I need to do to get him back IN the LR? Anyone having problems with their cats no longer liking the LR as they age? My male is 12 years old. He has no other health/age related issues.

Help!

How about using some of that Cat Attrack stuff in the litter?

I will definitely try the litter. Good idea.

I was looking for more of an age related something, though. As my little guy gets older, does the darkness of the globe bother him? Does he need more room to move around in there and do his thing?

Anyone have an older cat using the LR? Using an old LR?

Thought I should let you know, my little white kitty in my signature .jpg is 11 years old and shares the Litter Robot II with my other house cat, a 4 1/2 year old black kitty.

Sometimes Minnie (white cat) will get out of the box and before the globe can even cycle to clean itself, Sebastian (the male cat) is heading over to the box -- I sidestep him so at least the globe has a chance to cycle through and dump before Sebastian steps inside of the LR. Minnie is a petite little girl and only weighs 6 lbs; Sebastian is a big boy, weighs 12 lbs. and towers over Minnie in size. He doesn't seem to have any difficulty with the size of the inside of the globe. He turns around without problem and has never had any issue with not fitting inside the box and doing all of his business inside the box.

They both use the same LR quite successfully.

take him to the vet and make sure he doesn't have crystals or a UTI or something. urinary problems are common in older cats, especially males. peeing outside the litterbox is a common symptom.

Is the kitty peeing outside the box or perhaps hanging his rear outside the box and peeing with the urine ending up on the floor? I have a male about 8-months old. He gets in the LR to poop, turns around, and really does an outstanding job of scratching in the litter to create the hole and when he's done using it, he diligently buries, buries, buries to his little heart's content (I am tempted to yell at him, "STOP! You have done enough!") But as for peeing, he jumps in the box, doesn't turn around, and pees.... A couple weeks ago I noticed a dampness on the rug that I keep under the LR step. Next, I noticed some hard to remove litter on the step. And then an obvious puddle formed at the bottom of the waste drawer. I was going to rule out the young male because he had such outstanding litter box skills to focus on one of the other two cats but as it turns out the male's skills only count for poop! I am adding the extended lip and the fence to the LR to see if it makes a difference. They are on their way. I was thinking maybe your older male cat is saving his energy, now, and just getting part-way in the box then doing his thing??

I have two cats, one is an older female about 12 now and the other is a younger male about 3. We have had the LR for about 1 year now. The older cat did have a problem with peeing on the step at first, but we bought the lip extender and it solved that problem. The older one recently had a UTI so she was peeing and pooping in our closet. Now that the UTI is gone though she still doesn't want to pee in the LR, she will poo in it though. She will pee right outside of the box on the rug so I know she knows that she is suppose to go in the LR but she doesn't want to go in there. I can't seem to figure out how to get her in there to pee.

I have tried re-training her by locking her in the bathroom with the LR and food/water and she doesn't seem to be making a mess, but I can't tell if its because she is holding it until she gets out or if she is going in it. I don't think it helped that our younger cat was swating at her when she would come out of it though. We haven't caught him doing that in a while though.

I don't know if she isn't using it because it reminds her of the pain or she is just getting old and picky. I am ready to give up and get a regular box because I am tired of cleaning up pee.

Yes, I would give it up and get her a second box. She may turn back to the LR in the future. Any chance of kidney failure?? Did the Vet check that out? In the post above yours, I was focusing on the wrong cat. The other kitten was in kidney failure and was producing the puddles.
