What is the ECO Unit (gray)?

Postby currywood » Thu Jan 08, 2009 7:59 am

I ordered the gray (ECO Unit) LRII. I ordered it for the color (instead of the black or beige). Is there any difference other than the color? I have a call into LR customer service. I should have asked this question before I ordered.

I didn't know there was the option. Do you think it means Ecological, like it's gray plastic, rather than dyed black or bleached beige (or whatever you do to change the color of the basic plastic goo)?

I had to look at this gray model, since I have 2 LRs (my 2nd & 3rd units), so after I replied, I went to the LR website. The gray unit is mostly recycled plastic, so it is ECO! Congratulations on your purchase. I think the color is better than the black or beige; I'm jealous. FluffyBoy especially likes it. I hope he doesn't organize a strike (or worse) to get one.

(I wonder if they're recycling their own plastic scraps, or plastic whatever, from the black and beige ones. black+beige=gray? )

I have two Litter-Robots. The first one I purchased in 2005 and is the original model in bone. The second one is a LR II in black. I noticed that the bone LR has less trouble with litter-dust sticking to the outside of the globe. I am contently having to wipe down the black one or it looks very messy. I know part of it has to do with darker versus lighter color, but I also notice that the bone LR is a different texture; it is slicker. I am planning on getting a third LR soon and am trying to decide on which color. Black or gray goes better with my decor, however I know the bone color is easy to keep tidy. What is the gray one like as compared to bone and black? Specifically, how easy is it to keep looking clean?

I assumed the black one also had some recycled plastic in it since it was cheaper and recycled plastic products are often black to cover up the multiple sources of the plastic. I think undyed recycled plastic would look cool -- every one would look unique!

The Litter Robot ECO has a few differences besides the gray color. As most have said it is made of recycled plastic, "100% recycled plastics in 84% of the total plastic volume" according to the litter-robot.com site. Also it looks like it has 2 windows on each side of the "globe"? I would say that the gray would possibly hide the litter dust better too.

I wrote to the L-R people regarding the issue of litter dust on the outside of the black globe. They said that the darker colors show dust more just like a lighter car do, but that currenly all of the L-R's have the same texture as my current L-R II. I received another response a few days later telling me about a product that people have found effective at renewing the finnish of black and gray L-Rs. It is a product called Son of a Gun made by STP. It is a silicone based product that shines up and protects plastic and vinyl. It also reduces static that may help keep the dust from sticking. It is not advised for the bone color as it may discolor it. I will give it a try. Currenly I spray the interior of the L-R with a food grade silicone to keep the soiled litter from sticking and have found it helpful.
