Problem solved: No more urine on the circuit board

Postby Lechatnoir » Wed Nov 26, 2008 9:01 pm

After getting absolutely fed up with this tape mess and having to hang up a coin from the top of the entrance (this option without success), I decided to take matters into my own hands (literally). I purchased a meltable, moldable plastic substance and made my own LRII accessory. I hand-molded a gate type thing that fits onto the bottom of the entrance. It doesn't fall out or in due to some modifications that I made in my trial and error process. I traced the outline of the bottom of the LRII entrance and used it as my guide to cut and form the right shape. I made the height the same height in which the tape was effective at keeping the urine from being sprayed out of the entrance. I then spray-painted the finished product and now am free from the tape!! The spray paint that I used is inside/outside spray paint and is able to be hand washed. I wanted to let all of you know and to try to keep some of the people who have the same problem from returning their LRII because their kitty won't turn around, so that they can discover that the LRII really is the best thing in the world. If you want to make your own, send me a message and I can give you details on how to make one and what materials to use. If you'd like me to make you one, please reply to this post. Here are some pictures of the process and what it looks like:

Oh wow looks like you've had success. I use a LRII at my house too except ONLY the male cat likes it. The older female cat is intimidated by the covering over her head and REFUSES to use it. While I was hoping that both would adjust to it, I am at least ONLY manually scooping 1 litter box instead of two.

I am very much interested in your article and pics you posted but I'm not sure this senior citizen is adept to even consider trying to make one of these.

Thank you for sharing your progress along the way to solving this "turn around" issue.

My cat would take a dump right over that. I need to cover over half of the entrance.

Oh I could so use one of those. How can I submit my email address to you without making it public? I would pay for supplies and shipping and everything if you'd be able to make me one. Let me know how to send my email to you.

This is a link to a video that I made to demonstrate how to "install" the lip attachment. I made this in the white color for the above community member. The Saran Wrap on the video was used for sanitary purposes. I also experimented with making taller sizes before I cut this one down. I would say that a 2" to 2 1/2" high lip would work for agile cats who aren't afraid to step in over the lip. The one in the video and in the pictures above are about 1 1/2" tall.

This new circuit board compartment seemed like a great improvement over the LR1 which had the board screwed and duct-taped to the inside of the base, exposed to whatever was in there. The problem with this compartment is that its water proof. I guess they thought it didn't need to be because any urine would drip off the step and miss the compartment door. Somehow urine isn't always doing that.

Although this rarely happens to me I've put electrical tape over the edges of the door just in case.

I just received Lechatnoir's attachment that was made for me, and I don't know, from the pics posted of the Lip attachment that LR has come up with I think Lechatnoir's seems better. LR's looks like pee might spill over onto step holes and not only is it messy, I found no matter how much I scrubbed the drawer the urine smell still lingers and that sometimes encourages a cat to pee there again. I love the attachment that Lechatnoir made for me it's awesome and stays on even when the globe rotates. I did however order the fence from LR haven't rec'd it yet, but supposedly it keeps the litter from being kicked out of the globe. You can order the two together for 14.99.

This is one I just made from someone who saw it on youtube, this one is 2 1/2" high. I didn't get a pic of it painted black before I shipped it off. I think this is about the highest, or at least pretty close to it, that it can get without cats getting uncomfortable. But then again, some cats like to squeeze through small spaces!

Hi Lechatnoir! I would be very interested in purchasing one of your attachments. We are on the verge of sending back our LRII, and I've been scouring the internet for a solution. I'm really impressed with your idea and I'm hoping that it will work for us! Can you contact me? (dora.lam.himlin(at)gmail.com)

I am also interested to hear if other people have found that the door blockage (either with tape or lechatnoir's attachment) has been a permanent solution without further incidents or problems? We have been cleaning up cat pee stew and sludge and stinky carpets for 4 weeks, and while I know it won't be a perfect machine, it would be good to hear how people have fared.
