New Kitten Coming Home Today - start LR?

Postby Aziah » Thu Sep 11, 2008 12:06 pm

I am getting a Bombay from a breeder today...being sent via airline. Apparently, the cat has been trained with several litter boxes (including litter genie?) and different types of litter. But not with a litter robot. I got the same type of litter the breeder uses (scoop away) and put it in the litter robot, which is in the bathroom, where the cat will stay until he adjusts.

do you think he will be ok just showing him the LR? or do you think i should put in a regular disposable litter box too? i want him trained on the LR ASAP...and I dont' want to confuse him with two litter boxes...but I also don't want accidents all over my bathroom :?

what do you think???

Personally, I think the LESS choice, the better. I would put the litter you want him to use in the automatic litter box and see how it goes. Of course, show him where and put his feetsies into the litter so he makes a "physical" connection.

Good luck . . . and congratulations on your new boy.

I think you are wise by not having too many distractions when your new baby comes home. Keeping the kitty in a smaller
room and the LR should make the transistion more easy. I just did the same thing with a litter of kittens I rescued and
they adjusted quickly when everything was near them.It gave them confidence to move and explore without feeling over-
whelmed with their new surroundings. I did visit with them for feedings and play so that they could associate me with
a positive bond. It didn't take long for them to want to go into the bedroom connected to the bathroom for more
exploration. I tried not to visit too often so that they did have down time to establish a routine.
Your new baby might not "go" for a day or two because of the transition but if it is longer you might have to put
a regular litter box down for a few days until the kitty feels at home.
Good luck and keep us posted, we would love to hear how it is going.

Well...I went with your advice and did just the litter robot. He had an accident in the tub (poop) last night but has been going in the litter robot ever since! I am pretty happy about it!!! :D

...now if we can just get him socialized properly to us! (he is scared to death of all of us still...poor traumatized kitty) :(

BTW - I am using Scoop Away Carbon litter and it is working brilliantly! I am very happy about it. Just fyi!
