anyone get flies in the waste bin?

Postby SamCarter » Thu Aug 21, 2008 12:16 am

Ok, this is gross but most things involving a litterbox are so here goes...

We have been emptying the bin every 2-3 days (2 cats) for several months and this has been going fine. Now all of a sudden we open the drawer and there are flies in there! Ok, it's summer now so it's more humid inside, but flies? It gets worse - when we put the waste bags into the trashcan and leave it outside (trash is picked up once a week) we have been finding maggots in the can. AHHHH!!!!

I keep seeing people say they empty the thing once or twice a week so I don't think it's because we don't empty it enough. And we do a total cleaning with the hose and soap outside every month.

This is totally disgusting. Has anyone had similar problems? How can we get rid of them?

Ewww! That would really, really bother me! I haven't ever had that problem, but my first suggestion would be to make sure, when you wash it, that you make sure that everything is 100% dry before putting it back together to help minimize the moisture. I'd also suggest trying a different litter - no idea why any litter may attract flies, but it's worth trying. Also, maybe try cleaning it with a bleach based cleaner (just make sure to then clean off every drop of cleaner and run a fan and make sure there are no fumes that your cat would be exposed to!) to make sure that you have it completely disinfected. I would also maybe have the cat checked by a vet. Maggots show up when something is rotting - and cat urine/feces doesn't generally attract maggots in just a few days, especially not in a clean house - there must be something that they're drawn to, which, if it were me, I'd wonder if it were something health related with the cats (no clue what that may be, but that's one thing I would think of if I saw that).

I had the same problem. We have been using the Litter Robot for a while now and all of a sudden we got fruit flies as well as maggots in the waste bin. It was really gross!! I completely cleaned it out and still we got some. I put jars of vinegar out with holes in the lid near the box to help get rid of them as fruit flies are attracted to vinegar and that helped. I also put a sticky fly trap above it which also cut down on the population. I have not been able to eliminate them, but I have been able to keep them under control with the previous steps and cleaning out the bin every few days. We live in a humid area so the problem only lessens with the colder weather. :-/
