GETTING CATS TO TURN AROUND

Postby KittiesX2 » Thu Jul 31, 2008 7:36 pm

I've had the "Bot" for almost a year and try as I might, I have been unsuccessful with getting the one to turn around and put her head outside. The problem is she goes inside but does her urinating right at the lip of the doorway and of course sometimes misses and it goes outside. I know she doesn't like to have her head inside because she is always shaking it when she comes out, but how to get her to turn around? Any suggestions? Also having problems with odor, the whole thing stinks. I wash it, scrub it, use baking soda, pearls and it still has an odor. Anyone tried alcohol? Thanks :?

I had the Omega Paws Roll Away litter box before the LR so the cats knew to turn around. It might help to teach your kitty
to point it's head out. I was having odor problems as well and it seemd the more I tried to eliminate the odor it just got worse.
Tried all different litters and additives like Ammo Cat, pearl litter, mixture of litters, washing the globe with numerous
cleaning products but didn't really like the results. I did go back to clumping corn litter and empty the globe every two weeks.
I then wipe the globe and the tray with alcohol and now no more odors.

I have had it for about 4 months and all of a sudden one of my two cats is "going" over the edge (#1 and #2!). Before the LR, we had a covered roll-over box that was wider inside and he never really turned around in there either, but there was enough room for him in that one. I think the problem might be that the other cat goes in the back and he gets in second, not giving it time to cycle, and he doesn't want to step in it. I am interested to hear any suggestions.

The solution, as odd as it sounds, has been to put a strip of duct tape across the entry just high enough that the cat has to step over it to get it. For some reason this encourages the cat to turn around once they're in there. Naturally you'll want to put a strip of tape on the inside too to cover up the sticky part of the tape.

The lower half of the entry of my LR is covered with tape since I have a pretty small cat. I've also switched to three inch wide vinyl "gaffers" tape since that doesn't leave sticky residue on the globe.

If I don't use this method, my cat will take a dump on the step within a few days.

Scott,

Can you send me a photo of the front of your LR with the tape on it? I want to make sure I get this right. I have an occasional problem with this with my big male Turkish Van. He gets all the way in to urinate, but maybe 25% of the time he doesn't get in all the way or turn around when doing #2. My profile is set to accept emails and PMs.

I have some concern as to whether tape might discourage my two females from entering the LR, but I would like to give it a try.

Tks much,

Jim

At wits end here having exhausted every experimental tape, string, cardboard, foil, quarters, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc. modification one could conjure up, to try and get my cats to turn around. I'm not sure if the company understands that if the cat doesn't turn around and stick their head out, the system simply doesn't work; Due to it's round design and present size, the actual available space with depth enough to accommodate urine is limited to a VERY small area in the center. If they don't turn around and stick their head out, their back side will be too close to the shallow perimeter, resulting in urine soaking through the litter to the liner. My cats are relatively small also, one only 7 months old. Additionally if they don't turn around, they're forced to cover their waste in the direction of the opening resulting in a sandbox outside the robot. Obviously the cat doesn't know this despite their intelligence (one is a sphynx) which makes for a huge dilemma. I want to like it in spite of numerous other needed improvements...3 days left on my 90 day trial and I'm ready to return. Any suggestions GRACIOUSLY accepted!!

I think the new fence attachment supposedly coming out late February will solve my main problem which is the litter getting kicked out and constantly having to replace the tape. I think with the added room from lack of extra cardboard/modifications (in attempt to get them to turn around) they will be able to pee closer to where it needs to be. :D

captainhits - I shared your frustration! I DESPISED the tape thing!!! I made/invented my own sturdy plastic attachment for the robot because of the same problems that you are having. I just made someone a fence that was 2.5 inches high, which helps keep the litter from being thrown out of the robot like a sand truck. It also keeps urine in the robot and doesn't have any nooks that urine can get stuck into. Let me know if you'd like me to make you one. The litter robot company is also coming out with their version of the fence, which is a little different from mine. I posted what theirs looks like and some of my pictures are up to. I hope you get your problem solved! Cat urine is so gross when it gets on things that it's not supposed to!

Hi Lechatnoir,

Any hint or tips on how (and with what) you build your 'fence' would be great.
I live in europe and have not seen the Litter-Robot Lip Extender for sale here, so will have to fix something myselve.
Thanks in advance
