i am considering purchasing one, but i wanted find out what the longest amount of time is, that anyone has owned one. my litter-maid experience was less than pleasant. i don't want to spend $350 on something that breaks after 3 months or that i have to ship back 3 times during the 18 month guarantee.

so has anyone owned one for a year or more?

the construction of the LR is very nice. The motor that is used is pretty durable, and if it does go and you are handy at all it wouldnt be hard to replace.

My problem as detailed in my other post is that one of my cats liks to urinate / poop outside the box than in it.

I've had my robot almost two weeks. My six cats have used two Littermaids in the past and had recently tried two Purrformas  . They were all curious, but it arrived early in the afternoon, not a busy box time. Later that evening Thor was the first to make a peep. I left it plugged in since my cats are very familiar with automatic boxes. I also thought it would help them understand it's purpose. I made sure to sit in the patio then run a cycle, so they would not be frightened. They never went in a box like this before. I was so glad I got this box. It really is the best. A couple of days after it arrived I got a red blinking light. It worked so well, I had forgotten to empty the waste box. I didn't have any other problems until today.

Today I went to empty the container and found a total mess under the drawer. I had to un plug it, remove the globe and remove clumps and feces. I finally got it cleaned, but had to use Q-tips to get clumps out of some of the crevices. Then I had to wipe the entire globe to remove the streaks. I can't remember when I last emptied the waste so it's probably my fault, but I wonder why I didn't get the red blinky light. I'll probably call tomorrow to find out about this and will try to remember to empty it every day to day and 1/2.

I still highly recommend this product and am very happy with it. Within one week I had confirmed that five of my cats were using it. I'm still trying to see if Kali has been in it yet. I did not remove their other boxes right away. They had 3 jumbo hooded boxes and the robot for the first week. I let the boxes get dirty then cleaned them and left one regular box with the robot. That is how it will stay until I order another. I'll wait about 6 months then get another box if all goes well.

Molly has had hers for about two months.

The company is a couple of years old, and they have testimonials on their site that go back quite a while.

If you want to read some older testimonials, I'd recommend usenet. If your provider doesn't include a news feed, or you don't have a good way to search, try http://groups.google.com.

I did quite a bit of searching -- it was comments usenet that turned me away from the Littermaid (that company seems to be doing everything wrong).

It amazes me that somebody with 5-6 cats can even go a day without cleaning this machine. Thats a lot of kitty waste!....lol. Personally I think that someone with mechanical aptitude could modify the base to be deeper, thus allowing a greater waste content. I do have experience designing and building mechanical things.

This would void the warranty of course, and I have not given it serious thought because I only have 1 cat at present. If I had more though I would be measuring and sourcing materials....

ok, its good to know that someone may have had one for a year. i will search some more for info on product longevity.

i have 3 cats... so i will probably be putting some strain on the motor. i assume that i will be emptying waste every day...

the other question i had was this:

litter-robot is approved for crystals... but crystals do not clump... so where does the urine go that is may not get immediately absorbed... does it just collect at the bottom of the globe? has anyone had success with crystals without puddles of urine

Six Months and Still Going Strong!

Postby richsadams » Wed Nov 26, 2003 4:24 pm

We've had our Litter Robot for over six months now and it still works like the day it arrived. Beau and Sunny (males) both appreciate it's cleanliness and right-on-schedule cycle 7 minutes after they go.

I change the bag about every five days or so...it's gone a week, but with two cats, it's pretty full at that point. It's VERY easy to change out the bag and cleans up in a second. A couple of times I've put too much litter in it and it stopped but as soon as I removed some, no problem. The recommended amount is about 10 lbs., anything more and it can't "center".

Best of all...there's hardly any litter odor!! Woo hoo!

We've had two Litter Maid cat boxes (both eventually replaced after having to deal with the worst customer service ever!) and even the replacements quit in less than six months...what junk!

We liked the Litter Robot's 18 month warranty and have found the investment worth it!

We can highly recommend the Litter Robot to anyone with one, two or four cats! It's built very well and works great.

Thanks!

How long have you had your Litter Robot?

Postby srickard » Sun Dec 07, 2003 9:05 pm

I have had mine for 2 years and 4 months. I have 4 cats, 2 of which are quite large, about 18 pounds. After about a year, the control unit failed and it was fixed under warranty. It took about 2 weeks for it to be returned and I tell you, we really missed it! There have been no problems since. With 4 cats, the refuse container must be changed daily. All of the cats like it fine. New kittens seem to think it is an amusement ride but it's design prevents any problems. When and if they make a larger one for our big Maine Coons, I will buy a 2nd unit.

I'm going on 3 months now with a unit I bought used (on ebay). I don't know how much use it actually had before me, but it works fine. I have 2 cats, 12 and 15 pounds - and I clean it out 2 times per week. And, I have used only about half the amount of litter I would normally have in 3 months.

I highly recommend it.

I am new here and saw an ad for the Litter Robot in the cat fancy magazine. Then I did a seach on-line for it and ended up at CatFancy.com forums which led me here. The Litter Robot is so expensive but everyone says it is so good. I broke down and ordered one just now. Lauren was very helpful and we had already spoken for about 15 minutes before and she once again was very helpful answered my questions. I called back a 3rd time asking about refurbished ones and she said it could take up to 3 months. So I said ok stick with my order of a new Bone one. I have a little vanity area outside my bathroom with a tablet and underneath sits my litter box now. I really hope this fits and that both of my cats adjust to using it.

So far everyone who has one loves it. Lauren suggested I switch to scoopable litter now to get them used to it. Now I use regular fresh step. Is it true that scoop away works best with this unit. I want to buy some scoopable cat litter now to get them used to it. I have 2 cats one about 12 years old and the other about 4 or 5 years old. I've been researching this and reading forums for the past 2 hours and finally after reading everyones post here decided to get one. I really hope I am not disappointed it fits in the spot I want it and my cats get used to it. Should I not plug it in right away and let them get used to it that way first?

This is a great site and I will post more once I get it and if I have more questions. Thanks Everyone, Rose

In order to prepare my cats for the switch, I bought a hood for the existing litterbox. They had no problem getting used to that and after a week when I received the new box, I kept it unplugged for a couple days, only plugging it in when I could see it needed a cycle. (You won't mind doing that, because if you're like me you'll want to actually witness the process).

Good luck - I hope you enjoy it.. I know I do!
