Thanks so much for responding. I've been reading over and over everyones post and just getting so worried they won't use it. I am going to Super Petz tomorrow to see If I can buy a hood for mine or I may just buy a new one with a hood to use just to get them used to it if it's not too expensive. I just hope spending 1/2 of my tax refund money is worth it. I do know I need scoopable clumping litter now and I will leave the Litter Robot off for the 1st week and I will keep there old litterbox next to it for a while. This isn't something they can tump over getting out of is it? And is it ok to leave it plugged in all day while I am at work? I was told for two cats I will probably have to change bag every 5 days and may even be able to go a week. Someone was talking about a light does it light up when it's full telling you the bad needs to be changed? Is it easy to change? Lauren from the company said every couple months you may want to empty the whole thing and maybe wipe it around and refill it. Do you guys do that? I am afraid I wont put enough or will put too much litter in it. Thanks, Rose

I am so worried now. Mine came today the thing is big. One of my cats is big I really don't know if she will fit in there. My cats have never had a hooded litter box before and I can't see them going in this thing. It's a great invention and I know everyone on here says there cats end up using it. Mine just came today this afternoon. I did plug it in and one of my cats was watching it move around. It is pretty loud and I think that is going to scare them. But if it doesn't start till 7 minutes after they will be out of the room by then.

Right outside my bathroom is a little vanity table and underneath sat my old litter box. My bathroom isn't so big. Well this thing of course is so big I did put it in my bathroom. It makes it a bit crowded but thats ok. I ended up moving there old litter box right next to it. I even put treats on the step and let one fall in. My younger cat stuck her head in and scopped back out the treat with her paw. Tomorrow morning my mom is bringing me some catnip spray. I know someone said they sprayed it inside and it worked. My cat is loving the box and I read where someone and it was in the book cut the box to fit the robot. But I may have to return it so I want to save the box.

I know someone said it took 2 weeks most people said it took a few days. I don't want to force them in it. But I leave Fri am to go out of town till Sun night. I will just let there old litter box get really dirty. But I hope they don't use the floor. One of the cats just pooped and left it all sitting on top didnt even cover it up. I wanted to dump it out so bad cause it stunk but I lit a candle and sprayed air freshener and will deal with a filthy litter box till they use this.

Has anyone on here returned one or had a cat to big to fit in it? I know one person took out the old litter box right away but mine didn't go in a hooded one before and wont know what to do with this one. But I will give it time and see I have 30 days. But if there not in it by 2-3 weeks it's going back. Was I suppose to get a few extra bags and some litter with it cause I didn't? I e-mailed Lauren about that but thats the least of my worries.

I just want them to use it and like it. I am so glad I found this forum. Someone replied to me over at the cat fancy forum and there website is down I can't get to it. Feel free anyone to e-mail me privately with any more suggestions. I will reread here too again.

I think mine came with three 13gal bags, but no litter. I buy "Ruffies" 13 gallon trash bags at the local Wal-Mart. I bought a roll of 210 for about $3 when I first got mine. The bags are on a roll and pretty thin, but they are really cheap and work great with the robot. I think smaller bags will work, but 13 gal bags are a very common size, and usually the best priced. I change mine daily, so I buy the cheapest bags I can. You'll figure out what works best for you.

Just thought we'd update our old post. We've had our Litter Robot for over 4 years now. We even moved overseas to New Zealand for a few years - used a voltage converter - and are now back in the U.S. and it's worked flawlessly.

We can still recommend it highly! :D

Just passed the year mark and couldn't be happier :D

I'm about to leave my husband alone with the kitties for a week, for the first time since I got these three. He's done one by himself with no problems, but that was the one who passed, she wouldn't eat while I was gone, so that crappy Littermaid we had was fine for a week. These three I have now are constant eaters and poopers, so he's in for changing a litterbox for the first time in over 10 years.

I purchased mine in 2002, it has been in continuous use with two large cats since then...

I clean it twice a year and have had very few problems, and when I did, customer service was OUTSTANDING.

I have the "gen one" model vs. the new one that you would get today.

Trust me, you'll be happy to have spent the money. I've never once regretted it.

Had mine since Oct. '04. Couldn't be happier. Had to replace a globe under warranty and the circuit board after the warranty. Circuit board was relatively inexpensive and an easy fix. You will hear no complaints from me. The bot has handled two cats full time. Went through two or three littermaids before finding the bot.

Litter Robot--How Long?

Postby lee » Thu Apr 12, 2007 8:56 am

More than two years now. It was worth every penny.

The folks were very accommodating about extending the return period if needed because I did have some initial problems getting both of my cats to decide it was the new litterbox. But that is a different topic.

It has worked flawlessly since day one and eliminates the need for any special bags/receptacles.

I was attracted to it for several reasons. First it isn't open. With four dogs in the house, anything that is open/easily accesible is likely to become a buffet line (those of you with dogs know what the issues are).

Having an auto litterbox also meant I could (if the cats agreed) replace several litterboxes around the house with one.

But the big draw was the reputation on this list for reliability coupled with the return period and the warranty. And I figured being able to use regular trash bags would save money in the long run.

Having a litterbox that keeps itself clean is one key way to avoid litterbox issues. Many cats simply won't use a litterbox if it contains waste--either their own or that of another resident cat. I see auto litterboxes as a great way to help prevent these kinds of problem if you have a cat or cats who will take to them.

Hope that helps.

Hello.

We bought ours in December 2005 but didn't start using it until March 2006 because of some kitty health problems (which required them to stay in a cage for a few months).

So, it's been a year and thare aren't any problems. Cleaning is a bit of a chore, though there's a bunch of suggestions on cleaning in the forum.

A suggestion for getting your cats used to it - I see someone is letting their old litterbox get dirty. I went with the same tactic and it got my cleanfreak girl kitty to use the LR right away even though she was REALLY afraid of it (legs shaking and all). She got over that quick. I suggest scooping poop out though - I think urine clumps still qualify as "dirty" to the cats, no need for you to suffer too. I did this for three days and my boy cat continued to use the dirty litterbox (more urine clumps than litter) so I took it away and he switched. I'm sure it helped that his sister was using the other one - let him know that was what it was for. I've read that it's not a good idea to give food near a litterbox area because it confuses them - they'll think it's a place to eat and therefore NOT a place to eliminate. You could try positive reinforcement and give them treats when they come out. But when it comes to getting them to use it, I think a method that attracts the cats without food would be the best way to go.

Have two LRs for two years

Postby katsanddogluver » Mon Jun 18, 2007 2:37 pm

I have two cats and have had two litter robots for two years. Use two at home and take one of them with me and cats when traveling in the RV.

Only problems I have had has been with one of the sensors; the wire broke and I had to resolder the connection. Have had to adjust sensitivity from time to time also.

That's a major improvement with the LR2: no exposed wires on the sensor.

Yes, I also had to resolder a wire on the LR1 sensor. The old way you had to adjust it with a wrench was just begging for a klutz to break it.

I am going to work on increasing the drawer depth because I will be having cat sitters while we cruise to Alaska.

I wish I knew somewhere I could buy the modifications to drawer size.

Have had mine about 3 years with 2 ragdolls and it has been great.

Only issue I have is when I forget to empty it, the litter streaks around the globe and it gets nasty :) That is not a design flaw, just user error....as long as I keep it empty it runs flawlessly.

I am not sure if anyone else does this, and I am probably taking a risk, but every so often I hose the entire thing down with soap and water, base and all.

I take care not to spray water directly on the electronics and let it dry out for an hour or so.

Lauren has always been a great help to me as well. :)

I've had mine for three years. I just today ordered a new one because the old one is on its last legs. It was only very recently that I started having trouble with it. The inner liner tore, causing litter to leak out. Not a lot, but enough to make a mess. I could have sealed that up somehow but I have another problem, one of the teeth on the globe busted out, causing the gear to "miss" and get stuck. I've rigged it to keep working for now, but its clunky and I'm afraid its not going to last, and it will be just my luck that it will break again while I'm away.

APCP's customer service is outstanding. They will sell a replacement globe, a reconditioned unit, or a brand new unit to an existing customer for 15% off. I opted for a brand new unit since the old one is three years old, and has gotten a lot of use. I'm not so good about keeping it empty and the base unit is getting kind of nasty, so now's the time.

I am more than satisfied with the three years I got out of my old unit, it ends up being about $0.27 per day. To not have to scoop litter, I'll GLADLY pay that!
