I bought my LR a year ago in January when I adopted a 1yr old medium size rescue tortie. The bot arrived the same day as the cat (which I think helped). I left the bot on manual and checked/cycled it every few hours or so, depending on use. The cat would not even come out from behind the couch for a few days, but since the bot was being used, I was happy. After almost about a week, I turned it on automatic.
Beyond the cat being curious, and numerous times stepping on the step (and making it reset), the cat was never really bothered by the noise or rotating drum.
After two weeks, I purchased a cat-door and moved the LR out on to my screen porch. It took the cat a weekend to figure out how to use the cat door, but now I have the perfect setup. The cat can come and go through the cat door and with the LR outside, there is no litter box smell inside. The LR seems to holding up well in the Florida climate and humidity.
Absolute best part of the setup is that I only have to change the bag in the LR every TWO WEEKS!
I use Fresh Step litter and pressure wash the drum every 6-8 months and have probably experienced around 4 malfunctions (solid red light). All have been cleared by hitting the cycle button. Don't know what caused the problem, but after a cycle, things seemed to go back to normal, so I was never concerned. Before I leave every morning, I peek out onto the porch to make sure the light is green.
The bot has been a great convenience for me. Its low maintenance and has lasted longer between cleanings than I originally had hoped for.
I consider myself lucky that I had a good cat that took to it almost immediately, I feel bad for those of you who are having problems.
