Cleaning Exterior

Postby Fortunata » Thu Apr 10, 2008 8:56 pm

Has anyone found a good product or method to clean the exterior of the black litter robot? I do love the thing so much I just ordered a second one for our four cats.

I just use a sponge and some unscented soap.

Unfortunately once one cat uses the black LR, it will never look as clean. :(

I had the cream colored so I never had to worry about this with my LR, but I did have some other items that were that black plastic that seems to get a nasty film on them that is impossible to clean off. The only way I ever found to get it to sparkle again was with steam. Any cleaner I tried just streaked and ended up with that filmy white stuff again. Use one of those hand held steam machines set on a low to medium setting and have a nice lint free rag to immediately wipe with ready in one hand and steam and wipe as you go. I am not sure this will work on the LR, but it did on my kitchen items. Since than, I have refused to buy anything in shiny black plastic again. It is amazing how crummy an expensive toaster and blender can look after almost no use just because of that film the plastic always seems to have. It is a bit of work, but it is the only way I found to get shiny black plastic back to new looking.

What works the best is rubbing alcohol + toothbrush. This will not make the globe look out-of-box new but at minimal presentable.

Dip a toothbrush in alcohol to scrap the white filmy stuff. Wipe clean with warm/hot towel. You may want to go over a couple times to get it clean.

take it to the coin-op car wash, it will make it look like new inside and out-

(and the mess stays at the car wash!)

unfortunatly it needs to be done too often as the LR is the dirtiest cave your cat is likely to enter-

In the discussion "What is the ECO Unit", rxcats said,
I wrote to the L-R people regarding the issue of litter dust on the outside of the black globe. They said that the darker colors show dust more just like a lighter car do, but that currenly all of the L-R's have the same texture as my current L-R II. I received another response a few days later telling me about a product that people have found effective at renewing the finnish of black and gray L-Rs. It is a product called Son of a Gun made by STP. It is a silicone based product that shines up and protects plastic and vinyl. It also reduces static that may help keep the dust from sticking. It is not advised for the bone color as it may discolor it.

I'd also asked about the whitish film on a black globe, because my original black unit had a smoother surface and I had no problem. When I needed to replace a black globe on a current unit, I chose the bone (no ECO gray at the time) because I couldn't get the film off, no matter what I used or with what tool. L-R didn't mention Son of a Gun to me.

I wonder if an automotive tire product would help.
