Just moved - cat's won't use LR anymore

Postby L.I.T » Tue Jan 01, 2008 12:20 pm

About a week ago, under unexpected circumstances, we had to move my boyfriend's cats from his house to my house. In addition to this move, he's now had to go away on business for 3 months.

Prior to the move, every cat urinated in the LR, but one or two of them was not pooping in the LR. We tried different measures to fix this, but since the LR was in the basement, we could not tell which cat it was.

Fast forward to the move. All 3 cats moved in with me (boyfriend here for about 3 days) - so they've had a somewhat traumatic experience, I'm sure. Two are domestic, and the youngest is a manx. We've tried putting out pheremones to make things easier, and even brought much of their old furniture. We kept them confined into the bedroom and den for two nights, but they managed to get out the next morning.

For the first three days, all 3 cats were using the LR. Soon after, however, all of them stopped. Now they are all urinating on the couch, bed, and floor - and pooping around the LR.

They were all previously inside/outside cats. But we want to keep them in long enough that they won't leave and try to 'find home'.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I've already gone through two larget bottles of rug doctor, and now the smell is on my tempurpedic mattress, down comforter, and sofa pillows. Every time I clean one up and spray pheremone on it afterwards, it's urinated on again within a day.

I've tried to keep calm, soothe them, pay them a lot of attention. I thought about getting them prescription relaxation medicine, but only one of the cats has ever been to the vet - and there's no way I can get all three over. Please - any suggestions at this point are more than welcome!

Boy what a stressful situation for you and the kitties. You did the right thing by keeping them
confined into a one area but they are "esacpe artists". I tried the pheremone therapy but
Be Serene from 1800-Petmeds worked better. Since the cats are adjusting but refuse using
the LR you need to put a couple of regular litter boxes out for long while. Then maybe later, try
to get them to use the LR solely. Also all the urinated areas need to be cleaned with a product
that will eliminate the ammonia or they will be tempted to use it again. They really dislike
citrus odors and perfume, so you might try spraying some around the bed and sofa after it's cleaned.
Scat Mats also help in detering them from getting onto things without hurting them. You are providing
love and understanding so they will adjust in a few weeks. Good luck and let us know how
it's going.
