21 pound Ragdoll cat

Postby aka200 » Fri Dec 14, 2007 4:34 am

I'm thinking about getting a Litter Robot because I'm sick of replacing my LIttermaid every year and a half when it decides it doesn't want to work anymore. I have two cats, an 8-pound Siamese, and a 21-pound Ragdoll. I'm concerned that the Ragdoll may be too big for the Litter Robot. Does anybody else have a comparable sized cat who is able to use this? Thanks!

I also have 2 cats (brother and sister ragdoll) he is about 15 lbs. and she is about 12 lbs. They
are very long bodied so most of the time the little guy has his front paws on the step of the LR
when using it. I am not sure how much room there would be for a comfortable turn for a large cat.
There are people that have larger cats using the LR with success. There is not a ton of room inside
the bot once the litter is added. You might want to make a box with the same dimensions as the globe
and put you litter box in it to see if your kitty has enough room to dig and turn. I really love my LR
and the cats took to it quite easily. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for the response! I finally decided to just order the Litter Robot and see if my fat cat can use it. I'll just bite the bullet on shipping if I need to return it. I'm so hoping that both my cats like it!

Glad to hear your taking the plunge! Seriously though the LR is great. Do take time with the
kitties in switching to the bot. I put their old box beside the LR and let it get really dirty. Also
do not turn on the LR when they are near it for a while. Let them get use to the idea the LR
is okay and cleaner than the old box. If you plan on changing litters now is the time to do it so
there isn't too many changes for them. I also put a plastic step stool (Rubbermaid type) in front
of the LR so that the cats can stand on that while burying their "treasures". This really helps when
they need to turn around. The LR was easier for success than the CG. My kitties love that they get
to use their litter of choice. Keep in touch and let us know your progress!

Well the Robot came last Friday. We set it up and in less than an hour, my fat Ragdoll had already used it, so we were very happy. However, our Siamese decided to protest by pooping right next to it instead of in it. But since then, he has used it every time. I'm so happy they are using it, as it really is so much better than our old Littermaid.

One question, though...We were using it manually (keeping it off but turning it on to cycle occasionally) but switched it to run regularly today and it has stopped a couple of times and had all three lights on the front blinking. The manual said that means it was jammed. Is this something that happens a lot? Does it mean the bag is too full?

Glad to hear that the cats are taking to the LR. As to your question, I had the lights go off a couple of
times when I first set up the bot. When I finally adjusted the sensitivity and learned how much litter to
put in I had no more blinking lights. I also taped up the space in the drawer and the step to eliminate
any bad odors. I also put Litter Pearls Litter in drawer to help with the smell. I tried pearl litter in the
globe but with 2 cats the litter had to be changed every 7-8 days. I now use Fresh Results litter (natural
corn product) in the globe and everyone is happy. If you have anymore issues with blinking lights call
the LR people. They are very helpful.

I've had no more problems with the lights blinking on my LR but I have had a problem with my stupid fat cat. He used it fine for about the first week and a half but now more often than not, he won't turn around and pees and poops on the steps and outside the box. I've read about putting the duct tape on the opening, but he can barely fit in the opening as it is, I think that might prevent him from getting it altogether. And I've tried pushing his butt in but he is such an obstinate cat that he yowls and backs up when I do that. Are there any other suggestions for getting him to turn around? I think maybe there is just not enough room for him to comfortably turn around but he did use it fine for a while so I'm not sure. I'm really afraid I will have to go back to my LIttermaid. :(

I find that because my cats are long they use the Rubbermaid step stool for extra turning room and something to stand on while digging. My cats had used the Omega Paws box so they knew how to keep their butts inside. If your cat is using the LR then he is not rebelling against it. The issue is getting to keep his butt inside the globe. You will have to judge if he has enough room to turn inside the globe. He will probably put his front paws outside the globe like mine do. Good luck
on what you decide.
