HELP....LR IS ABOUT TO GO OUT THE DOOR!!!! LAST STRAW

Postby tjl153 » Tue Nov 06, 2007 8:43 pm

I love the LR...well, mostly. My cats love it too. The used it from the minute (literally) I took it out of the box. I do have a horrible odor problem though. I use worlds best cat litter and never had an odor problem with a regular litter box. Now we can't have people over to our house b/c it smells so bad...even when I empty the bag, the odor lingers around for a while. It eventually goes away. I empty the bag at least 2x per day and have 2 cats. The smell is a poo smell, the pees don't smell noticebly. I started putting some mimi litter in with the WBCL, and also sprinkling it w/ arm & hammer litter box deodorizer, but this doesn't have any effect...it still smells terrible any time someone does poo.

I am going to try another type of litter to get rid of the odor, but if that doesn't work, I'm going back to the manual litter box.
Enjoying my 2 little Bengals :)

I tried using different litters and put products in the base because of the odors. So far mimi litter when placed
in the base and Ultra Pearl litter in the globe has been the most successful. Very little odor but I changed
over to Ultra Pearl very slowly. It is quite different from other litters. I didn't want the mimi litter in the globe
because it is made with crystalline silica. It takes about 3 days before there is a noticeable odor but I empty
the base every 2 days. You could also try adding Odor-Z-Way in the base or put into a bowl near the LR
to help with the odor. Good luck!

Have you tried a different cat food?

I have been feeding Life's Abundance dry food, which is supposed to be organic and whatnot....its also supposed to have pro biotics which are supposed to help w/ digestion...
I guess I can always try something different. I had fed wet food (grain free) at one point, but it costs about $100 a month to feed wet food for the 2 cats, so I stopped that.

I'm getting some different litter today and I ordered some of the odor-z-way stuff. Their website makes it sound really good. I'll try a couple more things before I boot the bot.

Hope you find the right solution to the odor. I really like to LR but it did take a while to find the right
combination of products to help. In a regular litter box cats bury their mess and it stays there until
we clean it. In the LR globe it doesn't stay buried very long so I found the odor was in the base because of
it being unburied. So far the pearl like litter has worked the best. There are proboably other litters
that do just as good a job but I'm not switching for now. Have you seen the litter box that is partially inside
the house and the litter bed is outside in a contained box? It is suppose to eliminate all the odors. Just a
thought.

Like Mima it took me a while to find the products that work well in the LR for my cats -- And despite my current attempt to change cat food, the Nutro Naturals food -- indoor for sensitive stomachs -- was pretty effective in taking the edge -- the bite -- out of the cat poop odor. I have also covered the holes in the LR step (those holes seem pretty useless). Litter of choice -- Nature's Miracle (made out of corn cobs). AND the poop is down the toilet shortly after the LR cycles. The little tub I keep in the LR drawer is generally dumped twice a day.

I hope you find the solution that works best you and the cats. Like you, I don't want the kitty waste odor in the house and I can identify... I had a friend here last summer for a week. She noticed cat box odor only once.

If you put the bag in the drawer like this:

Then no odors will leak out through the holes in the step since the bag will block the air flow.

But if you put the bag like that, then how do you remove it without making a big mess?

I have 2 cats, and I have to remove the waste every day or it smells so bad. But I'd much rather prefer to remove a bag of poop than have to shovel the poop several times a day. :)

Well, if it's a tall kitchen bag, you won't have a problem. There's enough slack so that you can invert the entire bag, somewhat like taking a sock off your foot.

Yeah, the bottom part of the bag will slide right around the back and everything will be contained with lots of room to spare.

If you're going to use the bag method, you'll need a heavy-duty bag otherwise it will tear easily when you open or close the drawer. Also, it has to be large enough to cover the entire drawer or you'll most definitely have odor escaping.

I found the drawer to open and close rather clumsily to begin with. Trying the Bag Method (TM) made it much more of a struggle. Early attempts with a weaker bag resulted in tearing and loud cursing.

(It should be noted that I've given up on my LRII.)

I just got mine two weeks ago and I only have the one cat, but I love it!!!

I am using Tidy Cat Scoop Multiple Cat with Tidy Lock and I am sprinkling Ammo-Cat in the drawer with each fresh bag (which is only about every 5 days)
She eats purina indoor cat formula.

I've found cheap cheap cheap 14 gallon bags work fine. Yes, they do get little holes where the drawer contacts other parts of the LR but it's not like the bag falls apart when you remove it. And yes, it does make the drawer slightly more difficult to slide but for me it takes more effort to put my shoes on in the morning than to slide the drawer.

I have 17 cats and 6 litter robots. My house is open to visitors without any smelly embarrasment. I have learned to scoop out some of the litter from the litter robot into the drawer, just a 1/4 inch or so, and that absorbs odors in-between removal times. I do, of course, empty my robot each day into the kitchen trash can and bag it then. I don't use plastic bags of any kind in my robot. About once a month, I just rinse out the drawer with a few spays of Odo-Ban cleaner (Sam's Club), wipe dry with a paper towel and done.

That's how I handle the litter robot, but I'm responding because you complained of poo odor and that's a sign of intestinal dysfunction. Poo should not smell that so very bad, regardless of the litter box. Please take a fresh poo in a plastic bag to your vet and ask them to check it for parasites and infection or over-population of healthy bacteria. You might want to try withholding food for 12 to 18 hours (if cats are otherwise healthy), then restart food but add 1/5 capsule of slippery elm to their food (just fibre, just a little, tasteless on wet or dry food), and also sprinkle with Purina nutri-flora available from your vet. If the vet says there are no intestinal issues, stay with the slippery elm and nutri-flora on dry food for at least a week and see if there is improvement in less odor. You may need to change your food. I suggest trying Evo...50% protien diet. Sometimes it's the carbs in foods that over-stimulate intestinal bacteria and cause excessive odor. Not healthy. Evo (by Nutro) is highly preferred by most cats. I'm sure your bengals would LOVE it! Best of luck! Purr purr.

I'm back to post an update. I tried a different type of litter (Tidy Cats Small Spaces, and also Tidy Cats Immediate Odor Control). I also sprinkled some odor-b-gone stuff in there as well. This helped. BUT.....I think there is something else going on with their poo as the previous person metioned.

I have a small complaint about the Tidy Cats litter. It has very fine grains, so when it gets wet, it tends to turn to mud...so, I get muddy buildup on the area where the trap door opens. Sometimes the trap door doesn't shut all the way b/c it gets too gunked up around the opening.

They had both been treated for Tritrichomonas foetus (sp) and their stools seemed to be fine. I had been feeding them wet food, but it got too expensive and was hard to do if I had to leave town for a couple days (can't pay kitty babysitter to come feed them 3x a day!). I put them back on Life's Abundance Dry food and they were fine...then I decided to try the grain free Wellness Core dry food. I'm wondering if the Tritrich is back, or if the food is the problem. I've noticed their stool is softer and smells worse since I switched to this food. Before we found the Tritrich, they had been tested for every thing imagineable....Giardia, Coccidia...etc...multiple times. Also, they were on the purina forti-flora stuff etc.... so I feel its either Tritrich again, or their food...ugh...I thought I was done paying vet bills for a while.
Enjoying my 2 little Bengals :)
